Customer Reviews

Does what it says.

After much thought and reading many different reviews I decided to drop the $39 for the Garmin USA app for my iPhone 4s. My wife has a stand alone Garmin nuvi that has worked flawlessly for the past 3 years and with that in mind I decided that even though many other GPS apps were cheaper and had good reviews, I would stick with something I knew. Small price to pay for the piece of mind when traveling. After installing the app I powered it up and was really surprised to find that it almost immediately locked on to a satellite signal where as my wifes garmin nuvi can sometimes take up to a minute for lock on. Once the vehicle is in motion this app performs as well as a stand alone unit. I purposely would go off course and the app would recalculate and have the alternate route in less than 15 seconds. This app is definitely a 5 star app. As I write this review I am downloading the latest update and while I'm not sure what exactly it will do for the app, I am confidant this app is the only one I will ever use on my iPhone. Best money I ever spent to get from here to there.

Garmin vs TomTom

Positives found in both
* maps reside on iPhone (doesn't use your 3G data)
* integrates nicely with iPhone contacts
* built in Google local search
* lowers music volume when giving directions
* can have a phone call and still see directions/maps
* optional annual upgrade for traffic data (I haven't tried either one.)
* up-to-date maps, accurate directions, fast gps acquisition, fast route calculations

Areas where Garmin is better than TomTom
* The maps are easier to read on the Garmin. The TomTom night-time color scheme makes it difficult to distinguish the route from other roads.
* To see the upcoming directions you simply click the banner at the top of the screen. The TomTom requires several clicks through the menus -- not safe/convenient while driving!
* optional annual subscription for red light cameras and fuel prices (I haven't tried either.)

Areas where TomTom is better than Garmin
* contains an option to set the voice volume relative to the music volume. I feel like the Garmin is yelling at me!
* has basic music controls built into the app (play, pause, forward, back). You need to switch to the music app in the Garmin app if you don't have that capability through your car.
* Google local search lets you specify WHERE you want to search, ie near current location, near destination, or in some other city.
* Complex directions, i.e. "Turn left and then take the second right."

Much Better Than Streetpilot

Version 2:

It came out last night at around 2 am and I could not install it. Just got off the phone with Garmin and now have it installed. Here is some of what you should know:

1. It uses ALOT of temporary storage. I had 3.2 GB of space left on my iPhone 4 and it would not install on the phone. It said there was not enough space. What you need to do is install it on your desktop (which will go much much faster) and then sync it. The whole process for me took about 8 min on my desktop and 4 to 5 min to sync.
2. As mentioned by the first reviewer, they now let you mute the voice so it doesn't speak over anything else going through the car speakers (HFP or A2DP). This was a problem I reported when it first came out. I asked Garmin about bug fixes this morning and they had absolutely no documentation and where not even aware this was fixed.
3. Map screen has been changed. There is a left pop out with detour, where am i, trip computer and exit services buttons. The zoom/unzoom buttons have been removed from the right and show up only if you tap on the display. If you have red light cameras turned on, an icon will show up in the lower right hand corner to allow you to report new ones though I am not sure the difference bwteen my direction and oncoming quite yet.
4. To see the weather info, you need to click on a POI or icon to see the weather button on the top right.
5. If you have a home location that it seems to lose, just going into your favorites and go back out and it will reset your home location
6. I could not find an easy way of reporting my current location on facebook. What Garmin said to do is do coordinates, then search, then click on the coordinates icon and then finally click on share.
7. Points of interest has been totally recategorized. Its not in alphabetical order but in order they think you will want to use it. Not sure yet whether I like the new "everyday life"
8. There is now a new bright red icon to stop the active route. I find that particularly distracting and would have preferred more of a pastel red that does not draw my eye to it.
9. If you have not purchased traffic it should be 'grayed out' and not left green.
10. When you pick a favorite you see map, info, and go buttons below in the list instead of going right to a map screen.
11. You can click on the speed limit sign & change it or you can click on the + sign and create a new speed limit. However, if you have turned on red light camera, the speed limit seems to get replaced by the button to allow you to report a red light camera.

Version 1:

I have owned Garmin devices since the GPS 45 in the early 90s and have recently owned two NUVIs including the 3790t. I have given both NUVIs to my duaghter & son in law in Atlanta (I'm in Houston). I have had an iPhone4 since last summer and in April bought the Streepilot app. It had functionality but it was missing some of the stuff I was used to from the high end NUVI. I bought it at the time for $34.99 - it is a bit higher now. This is the app that uses maps online and I only once couldn't get maps when I was in a very rural area of NE Texas. My issue with this app was always lack of functionality I was used to. They updated this app to version 7 on 8/31 and I was very disappointed with the lack of functional improvement though they made one change I needed (3D view when not on an active route). Turns out they have different apps as well and one was on sale labor day weekend for $10 off ($19.99) so I purchased "USA". This is the one they call "Onboard" as the maps download to the iPhone (after 2 or 3 hours using about 1.5 GB which I didn't mind as I have a 32 GB iPhone4). I have to say this one has impressed me much more and has nearly all the functionality that was missing in the "Streetpilot" app (which costs more).

There are some things I would still like to see improved but this app is functional enough not only for me not to require an addition NUVI in my car but it's even better IMHO than my Prius navigation system (which will disable most of the functionality when the car is moving). If you have an iPhone, I would recommend it's worth getting. Don't worry yet about the traffic & gas. Traffic is the same miserable traffic on the NUVI (Naviteq). That is another $20/yr and if you think it is accurate it will aid in the active routing. I still use "BeatTheTraffic" which has a free and very cheap version. And Gasbuddy is also free.

Here are some things to consider

1. I currently can not get the voice prompts if I have my iPhone 4 bluetooth feature turned on and it connects in my car. As soon as I turn bluetooth off the prompts come back. In my mind this is a 'bug' and not a feature. (this is NOT the same as bug that was fixed giving us the 'mute' button, though I need to do more testing)
2. The "favorites' data is not shared between garmin apps, nor migratible. In fact there is no way to upload / download them either via mapsource so if you install or reinstall you will lose your data. This data is NOT backed up during a standard iPhone sync with iTunes (as far as I can tell).
3. iPhone4's like to overheat quickly on the dash - especially in Otterbox's. When then happens, the backlight will turn off and you won't be able to see the app. NUVI's have never had that problem in my cars (higher operating temps). So I put my iPhone in a RAM-MOUNT suctioned to the little window in the front left and the position it over my A/C vent to the left of the steering wheel. Have never had an issue.

Bottom line - if you don't mind 1.5 GB of maps and lack of 'pedistrian' support. USA is significantly better and more functional than Streetpilot. And if you have an iPhone, USA can very well substitute for a NUVI
