SKY & TELESCOPE HOT PRODUCT FOR 2012! MACWORLD 2010 BEST OF SHOW WINNER!

SkySafari 3 Pro will completely replace your desktop astronomy software, and forever change the way you view the night sky. With SkySafari 3 Pro, you can now explore the universe - not just from Earth, but from anywhere in the Solar System!

The Mac Observer says, "SkySafari 3 is the best of all the start chart apps for iOS":

As just reviewed in Sky & Telescope magazine, SkySafari 3 is "revolutionary" and a "game-changer":

SkySafari 3 comes in three versions. This version - Pro - includes everything in our other two versions, and adds the largest database of any astronomy app, period. Pro weighs in at half a gig, and contains over 15.3 million stars from the Hubble Guide Star catalog, plus 740,000 galaxies down to 18th magnitude, and over 580,000 solar system objects - including every comet and asteroid ever discovered.

SkySafari 3 Pro includes NASA's latest LRO Moon map, with 8x the resolution of any other SkySafari version. And yet it runs just as fast and smoothly as our basic version!

SkySafari 3 Pro can point your GoTo or "Push-To" telescope anywhere in the sky, using your iPhone/iPad/iPod's built-in WiFi, and our SkyFi or SkyWire serial accessories.

SkySafari 3 Pro accurately shows you the sky from any place on Earth, at any time up to a million years in the past or future. It includes 1100 encyclopedic descriptions of the constellations, stars, and planets written by professional astronomers. And it contains over 800 images from NASA space missions, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the world's foremost astro-photographers.

If you have an iPhone/iPad with a compass, or an iPod Touch with a gyroscope, SkySafari Pro can help you identify stars and planets by holding your phone next to them. Tap the Compass/Gyro button (or shake your phone) to activate the compass - now, as you move the phone around, the sky chart follows your motion. Search for any object in the sky, and follow the arrow on screen to find it!

SkySafari has a "Night" button to preserve your dark adaptation as you're exploring the night sky. The Time Flow feature lets you animate the night sky using simple VCR controls - follow the motion of the stars and planets as SkySafari compresses days, months, and years into a few seconds.

SkySafari 3 Pro includes SkyWeek - the mobile version of Sky & Telescope Magazine's super-popular "Sky at a Glance" column. SkyWeek features interactive sky charts for each day of the week, and links to more articles on S&T's website. SkyWeek shows you all major sky events: eclipses, conjunctions, good meteor showers — miss nothing!

SkySafari Pro's streamlined user interface puts the universe at your fingertips - and turns your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch into a 21st-century telescope controller. SkySafari is your celestial travel guide!

What's New in Version 3.5

1) You can now orbit other objects in the solar system! Select an object, then tap the new Orbit button in the toolbar to fly into orbit around it. If you select the Sun or any other star, you will fly far above the Sun, where you can see the whole solar system. Once in orbit, swipe to move around. New buttons in the lower left and right corners let you fly toward or away from the planet. When you're ready to return to Earth, tap the Home icon at the bottom of the sky chart.

2) A new super-hi-res Moon map based on imagery from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has 8x the resolution of any other SkySafari version. When viewing from Earth, Moon is always a disk with its correct phase. The Moon's dark side now shows faint earthshine, and appears sky-colored in daylight. The sky darkens when solar eclipses take place.

3) New maps of Earth and Mars have twice the resolution of the previous version. You now see the surfaces of Venus, Earth, and Titan without atmospheres or clouds. Mars's moons Phobos and Deimos are now shaped realistically. Saturn's moon Hyperion tumbles chaotically. Venus - or any other planet - now always shows as a black dot when transiting the Sun. Planet surface grids are drawn more accurately.

4) Planet and moon surface features are now labelled. So are the landing sites of every spacecraft that humankind has ever sent to any other moon or planet.

5) Object Info descriptions for the planets and constellations have been rewritten. Learn about the mythology of the planets, the transit of Venus, and total solar eclipses!

6) Object Info now shows angular separation between the currently selected object and the Sun, the previously-selected object, and the chart center. Object Info also shows opposition, conjunction, eclipse, and transit dates for solar system objects, as well as their apparent motion rates in the sky. Physical ephemeris data are shown for planets and moons.

7) Asteroid, comet, and satellite orbits have been updated with the latest 2012 data. A few new minor moons of Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto discovered since 2008 have been added. You can now show orbits of asteroids, comets, and satellites if you select them. Numerous other small solar system computation and graphics bugs are fixed.

8) You can now search for objects by typing a number without any catalog prefix. Searching for "104" will now find Messier 104, NGC 104, star HR 104, and asteroid (104) Klymene.

9) If you turned on the compass by tilting the phone up toward the sky, it now stays on until you lower it more than 30 degrees below the horizon. When connected to a telescope, tilting the phone will never activate the compass. A three-finger vertical swipe now zooms the display in and out.

10) You can now use the chart center as the telescope alignment/GoTo target by tapping the target label in the scope control panel. This lets you enter and GoTo to the exact set of coordinates of the chart center, or align on a point like the zenith (+90 altitude).

11) Improved app icon and splash screen.

Phenomenal

This is a professional-grade app. You can use it to control a telescope but for people like me that just want the best stargazing app, this is it. The included database is huge. No other stargazing app comes close. And there is a level of detail and refinement to everything that is unmatched. It's really a showcase app for the iPhone.

The devs are constantly making significant updates, and I'm not sure what else they could add at this point. I love the SkyWeek and the new Orbit feature.

Best star planetarium on iOS !

You can't get much better than this, on any platform. Indespensible for astronomers everywhere. If you look up at the night sky in awe and wonder, this is the app for you!

Love, love, LOVE this App!

Undoubtedly, the best $40 I have ever spent (though it's priced quite a bit less now). I dropped tens-of-thousands of dollars on my college education and didn't come away from that as satisfied and fulfilled as I feel every time I finish a session exploring the night sky with SkySafari. I've been using the app for several months, and the frequent updates make it better and better, though I must say, I do miss the old icon (I know - a trivial thing - but I found comfort in seeing Earth before a backdrop of purple nebula gas. Please bring it back!)

Go ahead and try and/or buy the other astronomy apps, if you dare. But no matter... you'll eventually find your way back to this app and you'll wish you would've started your journey with it on your iPad/iPhone.

Keep looking into the night skies and find yourself lost in them!... but now, thanks to SkySafari, you will be less lost than before, though you'll feel far more insignificant as an Earthling =) Na-Nu Na-Nu
