THE GAME
Prepare yourself for the ultimate sci-fi adventure by entering the hilarious and sizzling world of The Baconing created by Hothead Games.

You are DeathSpank, a hero and the ultimate Dispenser of Justice. You must defeat the Anti-Spank and his army of Cyborques, before they cast an evil shadow over Spanktopia.

Unaware of the myth of The Baconing, the hero DeathSpank, on a boring day in Spanktopia, decided to try on all of the thong undergarments at once. Much to his surprise, the result had nothing to do with chafing or wedgies, but rather the summoning of an evil incarnation of himself, the AntiSpank.

Balance can only be restored to the world by entering the Fires of Bacon and destroying five of the thongs. Now, DeathSpank travels the lands to find a sizzling solution to vanquish the AntiSpank and bring about peace once again to Spanktopia.

Roesha - One Bad Mutha, a 70's police officer-inspired co-op character is bundled in this update for FREE!

Fun, But Some Serious Control Issues

I've played the three games in order (they were all out by the time I bought them) and have to say that The Baconing, while the most graphically impressive of the three, was probably the least enjoyable.

Good stuff first - like I said, the graphics are definitely the most attractive of the three, and it plays smoothly on my 2010 27" iMac with everything turned up to 11. Yes, most of the old types of monster and characters from the earlier games re-appear, but the graphics are reworked to suit the new theme, and you don't get the feeling that characters, complete with the range of questions that you can ask them, have been cut and pasted from the previous game, which was the case with Thongs Of Virtue.

Middling stuff next - apparently Hothead got complaints about too many side quests in previous games. I didn't find that a problem, since the side quests added variation, provided a way of levelling up to get past tough areas, and gave the game a more open feel. By contrast, The Baconing seems very linear, and the lack of side quests makes levelling up when you encounter a particularly difficult obstacle tedious and time consuming. I actually gave up on the game at one point and left it alone for a while, it had become so frustrating.

Bad stuff last - the game's origins on consoles really show. Using the mouse (or in my case, the trackpad) to move around can get very frustrating, since it's easy to get stuck on scenery, hard to right-click (this is a trackpad problem, not the game) and you can lose the mouse pointer completely at time, so that you get beaten up badly while trying to find it to target something. The game does, apparently, support PS3 Dualshock controllers (in the Mac version, yes) and from looking at the button assignments, it looks like it could be a lot easier to play with one of those. The controllers are also the only way to access co-operative play mode. Co-op play seems a bigger deal in this game than in the first two - some of the Hero Cards that you can choose from on levelling up are Co-Op specific, and it's possible to end up with nothing to choose from *except* one of those cards, even if you're playing solo. Some of the battles also seem to be pitched more at two players in co-op mode, although it's difficult to know whether to blame those difficulties on that or the poor control. Finally, there are a fair number of bugs, including one that can corrupt your saved game irretrievably at about the 96% complete mark. Make use of all four save slots in rotation, so if you encounter it you shouldn't have to go *too* far back.

A bit disappointing, all in all. Prettier, but the dialogue isn't quite as snappy, and there's less of it, it's definitely the hardest of the three games (whether by accident or design), and while the first two games in the series were good examples of the "console RPG"genre , the linearity of this one makes it feel like you're just playing an arcade game a lot of the time.

I loved the first one, and was hoping for this...

YEASSSS!!!

DeathSpank was soooo much fun. I was hoping we would get this :-) More combat at times than missions, like the original, but still a load of fun. The arena was hard. AND - soooooo???? Aren't we getting the middle adventure. First and last is like a 3 legged dog trying to stand on only 2.

Love the in game help with the fortune cookies. Only had a few things I ended up really stuck on.

My favorite weapon is the high level drill.

Super creative

Amazingly super creative game. Love the graphics and story. Would prefer some some achievements or badges would be fun, and ability to compare stats. Also the combat controls seemed clunky. I didn't like the auto targeting for one thing.
