Customer Reviews
All Episodes
I use Instacast on a daily basis, but this update has changed the flow of the app, and for most people I think its a bad change. I would always go directly to "All Episodes" on the first screen when I launch the app, and start playing my oldest podcast first. If you turned on continuous playback then you were all set. With the 2.0 update "All Episodes" is no more, instead replaced with default playlists of "Unplayed" and "Downloaded", and unless you pay for Instacast Pro, you can't change the sorting behavior of these playlists, which defaults to newest first.
I don't mind the IAP for Instacast Pro, it means more revenue for the developer and less of a possibility that this app will be abandoned. The features in Instacast Pro are also very welcome, playlists are self explanatory and does what you expect it to. Bookmarks are a huge deal though, I can't begin to count the number of times I've heard something funny/interesting in a 60-90 minute podcast and then can't figure out where in the podcast it was said.
I do hope that the ability to sort the default playlists without having to purchase Instacast Pro is added in the future, this was a feature that many people were used to with "All Episodes", and removing that while at the same time adding an IAP will upset people.
Puts existing features behind a paywall
I definitely don't mind IAP in principle; a $2 base price certainly leaves room in my budget to grab more features through IAP. That being said, it's pretty disappointing to see an update, hope that an "unplayed episodes" filter has been added to single-podcast views, then find out that not only is that not here, but the pre-existing "downloaded" and "favorites" filters have been removed as well, unless you pay for Pro status.
To be honest, I would have gladly paid for Pro to get the "unplayed" filter I was hoping for, but stealing features from me earns this version and the developer a place on my "do not fund" list. Earn your IAP through new features, not by holding old ones for ransom. Fix it, and I'll gladly pay for Pro. In the meantime, I'd rather shop around and see what your competitors can offer than buy back functionality.
1-Star for removing functionality
You removed the ability to sort podcasts oldest-to-newest for existing, paid, customers. This is not right.
Then, if us existing customers want that functionality back, we have to pay an additional $1.99. New customers can buy the app for $0.99 and spend $1.99 to upgrade.
Existing customers paid $1.99 and now have to fork over another $1.99 just to have the same functionality as before the udpate.
I'm switching back to Podcaster.
