Description

Jeppesen Mobile FliteDeck provides pilots who subscribe to Jeppesen electronic charting with immediate, direct and reliable access to enroute chart data, terminal charts, and Jeppesen Airway Manual text. Jeppesen Mobile FliteDeck is designed for use on the ground or in the cockpit and provides the industry’s first interactive mobile enroute application that can be used as a true paper-replacement solution for RNAV capable flight decks.

With Jeppesen Mobile FD you will get:

• Data-driven and interactive enroute display
• Display of your aircraft position on enroute display and airport diagrams
• Standard airway manual text
• Arrival, departure and approach procedures
• Chart change notifications (terminal and enroute)
• Full-color, high-quality, vector-based data with amazing details and zoom capabilities
• Basic routing

Note 1: You must have a valid Jeppesen electronic charting serial number in order to activate the application, or update your charts. New Jeppesen subscription serial numbers are activated within one hour of purchase.

Note 2: For pilots flying by means of conventional navigation the following data elements are not present in Jeppesen’s interactive enroute chart display: Change over points, distance between VORs, signal gaps, and waypoint formations (also known as “intersection formations”). Pilots are responsible for ensuring they have all required navigation information prior to flight.

What's New in Version v 1.1.0

Route planning with rubber-banding functionality. With the launch of Mobile FliteDeck v1.1 we now offer this functionality, which allows a user to select and “drag” a route to new waypoints instead of using the “drawer” to enter each waypoint or airway.

Ability to add user waypoints. Users can tap anywhere on the enroute map and elect to add that area as a waypoint, which makes route planning quick and simple for pilots.

Printing capability for terminal charts. Print only the charts needed directly from Mobile FliteDeck, which allows customers to reduce the amount of paper in the cockpit.

New symbols for GPS connectivity. New symbols indicate GPS connectivity without leaving the Mobile FliteDeck application.

Screen Lock. A lock button allows the user to “freeze” a chart view in any configuration at any time, reducing the likelihood of losing the view by accidently touching the iPad.

Direct To Routing. The user has the ability to route direct to any location or Nav Aid on the chart.

Customer uploaded manuals. BA customers subscribing to Document Management Services now have the ability to leverage Jeppesen's cloud-based distribution system to push their operations manuals to the iPad.

NOTE: If your Airport List is incomplete or you see jumbled letters in place of the airports, please Force Quit JeppFD and restart the application. You can Force Quit JeppFD by pushing the HOME button twice, holding down on the app icon until it starts jiggling. When the red “-”appears, press it and then the app will quit running in the background.

Customer Reviews

Lots of room for improvement

My airline is currently in the testing phase for using Jeppesen Mobile FD in the cockpit. Here are my thoughts so far:

First and foremost ever since getting my "new iPad" (3'rd gen) the app crashes every time it gets done updating the terminal charts. This is bad, bad news for the testing review as it this bug has rendered this iPad's version completely unusable. I have had to return to paper charts. I really want this to work, but how can you recommend a company spend tens of thousands on a product that is this unstable. In my opinion this bug could jeopardize the entire operation.

That being said, when the app is functioning correctly I am generally pretty happy with the product. The charts are crisp and easy to read, the enroute charts load quickly without much lag, and having Jepps for the entire world stored with ease and convenience is beyond nice. I never want to see another paper chart again! There is room for improvement, however.

The app should have a built in rotate button. Some 10-9 and SID/STAR charts don't orient correctly making getting frequencies, etc. difficult. As of now the only way to deal with this is to pick up the iPad, rotate it, and lock the screen. Since in our application the iPad is mounted, this becomes difficult and tedious to do. A convenient rotate button would fix the problem.

There also needs to be the ability to save flight plans. My company often flies the same lengthy routes. Having to manually type the route every time is extremely tedious and I have given up on using the function. Please add the ability to save routes. Also, the stability of the route feature needs to be improved. Well over half the time the app crashes after I've input a route. This is completely unacceptable.

That brings me to my next concern, the JeppFD app stability is poor to dismal. After approx a month of use online I experienced well over 20 crashes while running it on an iPad 2. Some during fairly critical phases of flight. I'm not sure if I can recommend this app until stability is seriously improved.

Another issue I have is why is there no ability to pull up terminal charts when clicking on an airport on an enroute chart. As of now the only way to pull up a terminal chart is to search for it under the terminal chart tab. For diversion and quick reference situations the ability to click on an airport on the enroute chart and have the ability to view the approach charts would be beneficial.

Last but not least GPS functionality needs to be improved. Ownship position is only displayed on 10-9 and enroute charts and not on approach/STAR/SID charts. Also, often the GPS would freeze but the GPS indication on the app would remain normal with the coordinates and GPS frozen. Often putting the iPad to sleep and then re-awaking it later in the flight would cause the GPS to freeze in such a manner. Also, a few times the icon would be moving in the right direction, but the pointer (ownship) icon was facing another direction. Essentially showing the airplane flying backwards or sideways.

Overall this app has a lot going for it and has a good start. However the app functions much more like a beta product than one that is ready for market, especially in relation to an airline environment where things like stability are paramount.

I will be keeping a very close eye on this product and updating my review regularly. With a few improvements this app would quickly become a must have for any instrument rated pilot.
