"I’ve found that if you take the picture carefully, JotNot can capture a document as well as a fax machine can. And, of course, it’s much easier to carry around."
» The New York Times, July 2009
"I am amazed at how readable the processed images are."
» MacWorld UK / The Industry Standard
"The application works perfectly for casually taking photographs of your documents to ensure that you don’t lose them, and is one that I’ll probably wind up using pretty frequently."
» TechCrunch
JotNot converts your iPhone into a portable multipage scanner. You can use JotNot to scan multipage documents, receipts, whiteboards, business cards and notes into PDF files; email scans directly; or upload them to iDisk/WebDAV, Evernote, Box.net, Dropbox, or Google Docs where they can be shared with others.
All the image processing happens on your iPhone so confidential data remains under your control. JotNot works forever, there's no subscription fee, and you don't need Internet access to scan documents.
Special Note: Take advantage of our integration with Google's OCR engine to upload an editable text version of your scans into your Google Docs account.

JotNot is more than just a camera app. It uses proprietary image processing (similar to the imaging technology used in flatbed scanners) to automatically remove shadows, correct contrast and adjust white balance, so that your scanned documents come out looking as crisp and clear as possible every time.
JotNot will attempt to automatically detect the document in the image making it easy to remove the information you don’t want in the scan -- like the stuff lying around your desk: pens, coffee mugs, loose change, etc.
This update has many features including:
• Multipage support,
• Automatic edge detection,
• Dropbox integration,
• WebDAV/iDisk integration,
• Google Docs integration,
• Box.net integration,
• Camera stabilization,
• Automated backup of scans,
• A simple, easy to use interface,
• Ability to email scans as PDFs, PNGs, and JPEGs,
• Presets for receipts, documents, and more
• Automatic paper sizing: Letter, Legal, or A4
• Ability to save to the Photo Library
• Ability to import from the Photo Library
• An extensive web-based help (under Settings => Help)
Using JotNot is easy:
1) Take or import a picture of a document
2) Select the area you want to save. Adjust the processing settings (by clicking the gear icon) and/or select the paper size (leaving it on "Auto" is fine).
3) Click "Process" to enhance the image. You will be shown a preview of the enhanced image.
Tips to get the best quality scans:
• Ensure that the document is flat and well lit
• Use a preset mode when possible
• For faint text try maxing out the contrast
• Try to use image stabilization if possible. If you have a 3GS, make sure the auto focus has time to engage.
• If you have a 1st Gen or 3G iPhone, you MUST hold the phone at least 12 inches away to get a sharp image (due to the fixed focus lens).
We are actively developing JotNot and look forward to frequent updates. Please take our survey at http://blog.jotnot.com to help us decide on future features.

Comparing JotNot and DocScanner Apps
This is a brief comparison between JotNot and DocScanner Apps:
Both claim to do similar things: photograph a document and then email it to you as a PDF file. And, indeed, both do that.
But there is a huge difference between the applications: (In summary: DocScanner is in every way a superior application.)
• JotNot file sizes averaged 4.5 times larger, without any increase in document quality.
• JotNot does NOT have the ability to scan and send multi-page documents, while DocScanner handles multipage documents.
• JotNot did NOT auto-detect the document edges while DocScanner reliably detected the edges of documents.
• JotNot document quality was consistently WORSE than DocScanner under all tested conditions.
• JotNot did not have the ability to normalize document sizes into standard paper sizes, such as Letter, A4, etc. DocScanner auto-detected paper sizes and coerced the image to fit. This is important when printing out documents or when storing them in a document management system later on.
DocScanner costs more than JotNot, so if the $5 difference is important, it is the one reason to choose JotNot: Pay less and get much less.
This is not to say that DocScanner is without its flaws. Some of them include:
• DocScanner doesn’t remember brightness and contrast settings from one page to the next of the same document. So it is difficult to get a consistent look between pages.
• Neither application seems to understand that some documents have no grayscale, and so the quality can be enhanced by using a threshold level to get rid of background “tone” and enhancing and smoothing the images. This is basic document scanning technology in other types of devices (like fax machines.)
• You must decide in advance that you want to compose a “document.” You can’t scan one page and then keep “adding” pages. It’s a little non-obvious that “Camera” is for one page and that you create a “Document” and then add photos for multi-page. So the UI is a little un-intuitive.
The quality of documents under either application is marginal. It’s better than a poor quality fax (standard resolution) machine, and never as god as a fine-resolution fax machine. At best, the quality is barely at the level that a bank or governmental agency might accept. This is a serious limitation.
The quality could be improved in several ways, with good image processing. Multiple photos, or a brief video would allow sub-pixel interpolation, which would increase the resolution. Taking multiple photos of the same document would also allow sub-pixel resolution, enhancing image quality. But neither of these applications is that advanced.
In summary: Don’t expect better than a low-quality fax machine. But having a document scanner can nonetheless be extremely handy when traveling. There is room for improvement in the image quality.
