Description

Literary Analysis Guide is a reference tool for students of literature, rhetoric, and writing. The elements of literature are arranged around three clickable interface wheels. Touch any term on the wheels for a detailed definition, examples from literature, questions to ask, and an example essay paragraph which analyzes that term. Students can also reference an illustrated version of each analysis paragraph which highlights the topic sentence, textual evidence, and analysis portions of text.

Twelve of the most commonly used figures of speech are presented around a fourth wheel, and students can look up less common literary devices in a full glossary of literary terms. In an expanded section on meaning, students can reference the proper sequence of literary analysis, patterns of paragraph development, and common elements found within successful literary analysis essays.

Literary Analysis Guide has helped students visualize how the elements of literature develop style and meaning since the beginning of the smartphone revolution. Now with illustrated example paragraphs for all major terms, users can see literary devices at work within properly written analyses. Also, with a full glossary of literary terms, students can now search for the meaning of more esoteric literary concepts including a broadened selection of figures of speech, poetic forms, dramatic forms, tropes, schemes, techniques, and various forms of literary criticism.

Whether preparing for the Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature exam or composing a graduate-level thesis, this app will help you on your way. Literary Analysis Guide was developed by a college English professor with extensive secondary experience and is appropriate for all levels from secondary through university-level academics.

Great App

I like the way this app is presented: the circular wheels suggest the interrelatedness of their constituent parts, and the descriptors, explanations, and examples of each term or idea are generally lucid, complementing the definitions nicely. A bonus feature is the presence of questions relating to the terms. Rather than merely offering a resource bank of terms and examples, these questions suggest proper paths by which to approach literary/rhetorical analysis. I suspect that these questions would encourage the thoughtful student to move beyond mere recognition or labeling of rhetorical terms and strategies into realms of more useful analysis: one question, for example, encourages to student to consider how the work means. Obviously an awareness of the dynamics of the Rhetorical Triangle (I mean here writer, audience, purpose, not logos, pathos, ethos) help move students beyond mere dead-end observations. I think this would be great for my students to have as a resource when faced with a passage to analyze (much more useful in class than, say, certain social networking apps!). I was impressed by the support, too--within the hour after sending a question I received an informative and courteous reply. It sounds like an update is in the offing; I'd love to be able to use the Dock to VGA cable to share this with my classes. Overall, though, this is a great app.

Idea fantastic, overall lacks some key things

I love the idea of this app considering I'm in AP English. I believe this would be a perfect studying app BUT it lacks a lot of details. Most of the definitions are quick descriptions and most of the vocabulary terms in here lack examples, detail, and etc which is provided in a few of the terms. Please update this app with more information!:)
Overall this app is worth the money to get a quick look through to freshen up your mind or if you don't need to completely understand the terms.
