MacJournal. The most popular journaling and blogging
software for Mac OS X in the world is now available as a
mobile version for the iPhone.

Out and about?
You know what we mean. Run here. Run there. And in
between all that running, events happen. Then, when
you’re able to stop and take a breath, you think to yourself,
“Now, what was that thing that happened? I wanted to write
it down.” – only to realize that you forgot what it was.

Now you don’t have to wait to until you sit at your desk to
make an entry in your journal. MacJournal for iPhone gives
you the ability to record an event or that special moment.

Organize, chronicle and edit all your important information
fast and on the fly. Best of all, unlike other journaling apps
out there, you can blog to any of the popular blog sites using
MacJournal. Not a blogger? Use MacJournal on its own or
sync it up to your desktop version of MacJournal when you
get back to your Mac. Either way, MacJournal has you
covered.

WITH MACJOURNAL YOU CAN:

-Create entries in multiple journals.

-Sync* with your copy of MacJournal on your Mac.
Edit your entry on the fly then sync it up when you
get back to your Mac. Data syncing will occur over
a shared wireless network.

-Blog from your journal on your iPhone or iPod
Touch to one of a list of popular servers such as
Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad, or WordPress.

-Set a passcode to lock your data upon opening
MacJournal.

-Have consistent and familiar look and feel on
both iPhone version and Mac OS X version.

-Search or browse entries by using the search
field at the top of each journal screen.

-Create numbered or bulleted lists.

-Journal in either landscape or portrait mode.

TO SYNC:
To sync with the desktop version of MacJournal 5.2,
touch the “Sync” button when viewing a list of entries.
If MacJournal 5.2 is running on a Mac on the same
wireless network as you, its name will appear. To start
the syncing process, touch the name of the Mac with
which you want to sync. MacJournal does REQUIRE the
user to have MacJournal 5.2 (or later) for Mac OS X 10.5
or later installed.

*The initial 1.x release of MacJournal focuses on simple
text-based entry creation and desktop syncing, as well
as streamlined blogging direct from your iPhone or iPod
Touch. MacJournal supports secure desktop to
iPhone/iPod Touch data synchronization of text-only
entries in non-encrypted journals, between an
iPhone/iPod Touch and one or more Macs that are
connected to the same wireless network. Images and
attachments embedded in entries on the desktop
version of MacJournal 5.2 are not synced to MacJournal
for your iPhone, and entries with styled text on the
desktop will appear in plain text on the iPhone/iPod
Touch. Improved and expanded syncing and text editing
support will follow in future versions of MacJournal.

What's New in Version 1.4.1

Fixed in 1.4.1:
- Restored missing sync icon
- Removed errant beta notice

Changed in 1.4:
- Added display of seconds to the entry date editor in the Inspector panel.
- Increased the maximum font size to 72 points.
- The search defaults to just "Name" instead of "All."
- Fixed an issue where text for brand new entries might not be saved when switching to another application.
- [iPad] Changed the "New Entry" button to respect the selected journal in the sidebar, not the journal of the selected entry.
- Added an optional accessory bar to the keyboard with a way to insert the current date, list mode controls, and a live word count display.
- Added 2x versions of most art.
- Searching will search nested journals as well, so search at the top level to search everything.
- Changed the row behavior during edit mode to show the blue triangle button instead of responding to a click anywhere in the row.

Customer Reviews

I'm guessing the dev doesn't use MJ

I find it amazing that there is no ability to take a photo and put it in an entry. Honestly, how that got overlooked is beyond me.

I do enjoy the app though. It synced easily with the Mac app. I love being able to write directly into the app on the go, rather than emailing/copying/pasting. I'm glad that is over. It's also pretty clean and there is a tag browser (which isn't available on the Mac app. Weird, right?).

The paired Mac app and iPhone app are great, though. I can't help but think that both apps, however, could really use a good once-over from the Mariner team. I like them both, will continue to use and recommend them both, but there are needed things missing to the point that you can't help but wonder if the developers even use the product.

Still, much more feature rich than other options. I recommend it if you can get past the weird missing features (like no calendar view, no photos).

sync deleted journal entries

I tested the sync between iPhone and mac macjournal for about a week and it worked flawlessly, a bit cumbersome but met my needs.
I went on a working vacation for two weeks, synced and Mac journal for mac crashed. reopened and synced again and all entries from those two weeks were gone from iPhone and macjournal. Due to my error, time machine was not on, so unless macjournal has a backup all that data is lost. not happy. Of course, I did find out macjournal for mac was updated when I was gone. don't know if it resolved that specific problem, regardless I now have to recreate those notes…. went to macjournal forum and they said there was a way to recover entries…lost the date stamp but all 40 entries were recovered

Solid journal/writing app

MacJournal for iPhone
Things I like about it:

Sync with Mac Desktop
Nested folders/journals
Tags
Bullets in text

Things that I'd like to see:
Calendar view of entries
Photo attachments
Allow multiple MacJournal documents from Mac version to sync with iPhone app
Show comments like in Mac version
Change background color for pages
Per journal themes

Keep on going -- you have the potential for matching the greatness of your Mac app.
