Description
Hold the Moon in your hands. Moon Globe HD turns your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad into a precision instrument for viewing Earth's Moon. Satellite imagery and topographic laser altimeter data are combined to render the Moon with realistic lighting in realtime 3D.
Use the multitouch screen to manipulate the view. Spin above the surface, or switch to Telescope mode to see the Moon as it appears from your location on Earth. Adjust the display time and watch the sunlight shift over the lunar landscape. A "tag cloud" floats just above the surface, labeling terrain features and spacecraft; touch any label to find out more about that feature. Moon Globe also shows you where the Moon and Sun are in the sky with its dynamic sky compass.
*** PLEASE NOTE ***: Regular Moon Globe is a smaller download and is free. This HD version has slightly, not extremely, better resolution and rendering; it is intended for people who have already tried the free version and liked it.
As Moon Globe HD requires advanced OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics, it does not work on older devices like the original iPhone, iPhone 3G, or 1st or 2nd generation iPod Touches. Regular Moon Globe works on those devices.
What's New in Version 2.1.1
- Optimized for iPad 2.
- Sharper labels.
- Better rendering around the poles.
- Updated surface normal (lighting) map using the very latest Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
Version 2.1:
- Moon Globe HD is now a universal app supporting iPhone (3GS and later) and iPod Touch (3rd generation and later) as well as iPad. Because Moon Globe HD relies on advanced OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics, it does not support original iPhone, iPhone 3G, or 1st or 2nd generation iPod Touch. Regular Moon Globe still supports those older devices.
- There is now a separate button in the toolbar to turn on or off the Sky Compass (as with regular Moon Globe on iPhone/iPod Touch), and the compass is now larger and displayed in the center of the screen when turned on. Compass direction can be turned on or off in the Options menu (for devices that have a magnetic compass).
- Support for iOS 4.
Customer Reviews
Great for Lunatics!
As an amateur astronomer and long-time Moon gazer using telescopes large and small, this app blows me away! And the price is right. I can even use this at the telescope to decide what to look at and get the name of what I see. I can reverse the view left to right, or place South up or North up, to match what I see through a refractor, a Newtonian, an SCT, whatever! This app is very well done and a pleasure to use, thanks!
Astonishing. Great job!!
Very, very clever. This is one of the very best apps of any kind I've seen, and the more you know about how the moon works, the more you'll appreciate the developers' care and ingenuity. I was about to suggest that they simulate the monthly libration wobble, when I found I could spin the date and it librated its little heart out. The manual phase lighting option is gorgeous, and the fully configurable telescope view reversals are simple and wonderful. An extensive crater name listing and automatic locator works both in flyover mode and locked to telescope view. Markers for spaceflight landings and central aspect points for Earth and Sun. Congrats to the developers for aiming high and caring to do it accurately and beautifully. I instantly spent the .99 on the HD versions for Moon & Mars. Thanks very much, and I hope to see more from you.
Great app but....
Love this app but wouldn't it be great if the next update allowed you to send a still pic from the iPhone or iPad to someone else via SMS or email..Can u guys do that?
