Real GPS Application
Combines a user friendly application with a hard core mapping application with a choice of maps... Everyone should have this if they're interested in where they are the planet.
Replaces my printed maps in the car
This is among my favorite apps on the iPad. I'm a rail fan and enjoy exploring old out of service rail lines. The MotionX map shows long abandoned railroad rights of way, including company names. I've found old rights of way that have totally disappeared over the years, as well as current active lines with this app.
This app is best with a 3G or 4G iPad which includes the GPS hardware. In fact I bought a 3G iPad 2 largely because it included this function. Now a tap of a button in Motion X GPS takes me to where ever I'm currently located.
One of my only problems so far was in the Tracks feature. Either I don't understand it properly or something is wrong with it. If I turn on the tracks layer, my maps are covered in blue lines showing every place I've been, that I can't seem to clear. The instructions tell you how to start recording a track and how to save it, but there seems to be no way to stop the app from tracking your moves. I just disabled that layer and don't use the feature. I see the latest update seems to have changed this feature so I need to play with it some again.
The other feature that has been confusing is the ability to save maps so you can read them when there is no Internet connection. I figured it out and saved a number of maps covering areas I explore frequently, but when the latest IOS update came out, all my saved maps were lost. I found the files in iTunes, but I'm not sure how to get them back into Motion X.
Other than these two issues, this is a great app that justifies my iPad purchase.
Love the breadcrumb feature
It helped us navigate around backroads on vacation as well as hiking
