Movist
Movist is to VLC as Mac is to Windows; they're different approaches to the same end, both have strengths and weaknesses, but Movist 'just works' and is much more elegant. I'm confused why I'm not hearing people tell me how awesome Movist is all over the place, it's like a well kept secret.
Movist is best player
I use also Quicktime, Quicktime 7, MPlayer OSX Extended, and VLC. Overall Movist is the most versatile and best player. It plays pretty much everything I throw at it. Like probably everyone else, I hate the new icon. I kept a copy of the old version around and just pasted the old icon over the new one in the Get Info box. Problem solved. Whenever you update Movist you will have to do it again, so keep a copy of the old icon around.
Movist
Movist is a great application. The interface is much more affable than VLC or the Mplayer variants. However…Movist lacks a few critical features – namely, accurate auto detection of fonts for subtitles (which means you have customize all the subs), and lacks chapter navigation in MKVs. This app would be close to perfect with chapter navigation.
