Description

A unique instrument/control surface where you can learn every Major/Minor chord in 2 minutes. The hexagon note layout allows songwriters to discover new melodies and musical relations, as well, novices can learn how to play music. If you want more sounds than the built in instrument Musix offers Midi (DSMI) and OSC out to control anything you want.

"Anyone who loves music, regardless of skill level, owes it to themselves to experience Musix. Simply exploring the app will open musical doors you never knew existed." - 148apps.com

NOTE: Musix is NOT meant to teach you how to play a piano! It is it's own instrument that has many benefits over a piano. By playing you will learn real relations between notes and patterns within music.

The definitive isomorphic keyboard.
Musix is a fully-customizable multiple-layout isomorphic musical keyboard.

Each hexagon on the screen is a note, and surrounding hexagons are harmonically related.

WHY MUSIX:

- Learn how to play every major and minor chord in minutes
- Play along with your favorite song without practicing for years
- Learn one shape, play in any key
- Explore music by the relationship between notes
not by placement on an instrument
- Play along with your friends without being an expert
- Release the song in your head

FEATURES:

✔ Different Key Sizes
✔ Slide the keys to show the notes you need
✔ Multiple Instrument Sounds
✔ OSC/Midi Support
     - Inter-note expressivity
✔ Preset Layouts
✔ Create Your Own Layout (iPad only)
✔ Play along with your favourite songs

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

What this means is that once you have learned a pattern, say a chord
or a scale, that pattern is the same for all keys, even the dreaded
A-Flat! What's more, you can learn to play melodies on a traditional
keyboard by playing them on the Musix keyboard and watching where the
sharps and flats go.

Songwriters benefit by discovering new melodies and musical
relationships. Novices find it easy to learn to play. Experienced
musicians are rewarded with an intuitive interface.

There are many isomorphic keyboards out there, from concertinas,
accordions, and "jammers" (which use the wicki-hayden layout) to
harmonic-table keyboards and more. You can have them all in one
application, and more besides.

Hexagonal isomorphic keyboards are defined by the harmonic
relationship between the keys. You can define the relationship in two
directions, say a major third and a minor third, and the third
direction is the difference of these two intervals (in this case, a
semitone).

Musix comes with a set of built-in layouts which use different
harmonic relationships between the notes. Each layout has its own
advantages and disadvantages. For example, the harmonic table layout
allows you to play a major or minor chord with one finger, by
touching at the intersection of any three hexagons. The Wicki-Hayden
layout puts all the white keys together. Try them all and find one
that works for you.

Musix has six real-time FM-synthesized instrument sounds. No wavetables
here. Each note sound is synthesized on-the-fly, meaning that you get
the full richness of bass and brightness of treble that the ipad
speaker or your headphones can generate.

You can change the size of the keys to fit your fingers and your
dexterity - start practicing with epic-sized keys and as you get
better you can make the keys smaller to give you more notes on the
screen. Keyboard layouts are fully customizable - create your own
isomorphic keyboard centred on any note. Remove the note labels for a
clean look.

What's New in Version 1.1.2

- Fixed an iOS bug where selecting default layouts causes the application to crash.
- Fixed a bug which did not allow background audio
- Added a link to subscribe to future Musix and Musix Pro (to be released) news.

Great but specialized

Musix recreates a variety of hexagonal isomorphic keyboard layouts, isomorphic meaning that chord and scale shapes remain the same regardless of where you play them. The idea of isomorphic hexagonal layouts isn't new; one of the oldest such layouts, the Wicki-Hayden, dates back to 1896 and is commonly used in accordions. The motivation behind hexagonal layouts, is to allow for more chord and scale patterns, and to do so using less space, thus making fingering much easier, and providing the player with more range as well.

This app includes seven such layouts, including the Wicki-Hayden, the Harmonic (the best one in my opinion) as well as a layout developed just for the ipad. It also allows for the key size to be changed, the screen to be dragged around to reveal higher and lower notes, and even lets users come up with their own layouts (countless hours of experimentation here!). The documentation is great, and it includes chords, intervals, and scale patterns for four of the presents, as well as short videos that can be viewed from within the app.

The sound quality is decent, using FM synthesis to supposedly recreate natural instruments. Even if it doesn't succeed, the sounds are nonetheless pleasing to the ear. There are six sounds included, four sound like generic fm synths, and there is also a xylophone and a slightly more spacey sound. Finally, you can use Musix to wirelessly control any synth running on your PC or Mac, using either Osc or Midi (I found that to make this work, you need to setup a wireless network on your computer, but maybe its just an issue with my wireless provider, also, if you want to play music without lag issues, a dedicated connection is probably the way to go anyway)

Two features I would like to see, are the ability to save your layouts (even though recreating them is fast), and also the ability to highlight the note currently being played across the keyboard.

This app wont appeal to those who are looking for something like a virtual piano with a few extra sounds, but for those who want to explore the world of hexagonal layouts, and possibly even integrate them into their workflow, this is probably the best app available right now, and definitely worth the price of a dollar !!

Awesome

Amazing app for the price. Was a little more difficult to get working with OSCulator than I would of liked, but I can hardly complain as the control surface here is straight up awesome. This app looks good, performs great, and it's dirt cheap. What's not to love? Bravo!

Superb, but needs...

Virtual midi!
