Still lacks parity with Numbers
Was excited to see the posted update in the hopes it would improve feature parity with the desktop version when files are imported. Alas, still lacking many of what I consider essential functions of spreadsheet software like.
A list of elements lost when importing with one of my files:
- Sheet settings, such as headers and footers, were removed
- Unsupported formulas were removed. The last calculated values were imported.
- Table categories were removed.
- Hyperlinks on objects were removed.
- Conditional formatting of table cells was removed.
- Mixed-type and 2-axis charts can't be edited.
- All comments were removed.
Numbers on the Mac OS has some great things going for it. But it is really disappointing to put time into learning formulas and layout tricks and have them wiped out when viewing the file on a mobile device.
Numbers and Office do NOT play well together.
The only way to get an Excel 2010 file into iCloud was to save as an earlier format. Not cool going backwards. Uploaded a file that "was" password protected, until I opened it. Now its open for everyone to see. You can't close the file! The only way to keep anyone from seeing the contents was to delete it. That defeats the purpose of mobility if you can't take it with you and still have privacy.
It's a great concept but has bugs and missing features.
Numbers
Numbers, once I invested the time to understand how to use it, is the best spreadsheet program I've ever used. That includes 123, Excel for Microsoft, Excel for Apple and Numbers09 for iMac. It's frustrating at first because it requires a new way of working with data and formulas but the return on the investment of time is amazing speed and simplicity of designing, modifying and sharing spreadsheets. Charts are almost magical. Many of the negative reviews I read here could have been written by me if had given up on really learning the program after an hour or two. One reviewer who said the Numbers doesn't offer the UNDO function must have invested one or two minutes or be blind because that function is constantly available as you work with spreadsheets. Numbers is a wonderful tool in working with numerical data. Like any advanced tool it requires an investment of time and energy to realize the benefits.
