PhonoPix version 2.0 is an exciting update to the engaging phonological app with flashcard and matching activities. The highly requested group scoring feature is available for collecting scores in flashcards on up to 4 children at a time. A group of students can now collect data as they practice sounds in words and sentences with a speech-language pathologist, their parents, or independently.
PhonoPix is a phonological app and the companion to our successful articulation app called ArtikPix. PhonoPix has flashcard and matching activities with minimal pairs to contrast childrenʼs incorrect responses with the target responses. Example minimal pairs include “tea” and “key,” “ton” and “sun,” “bee” and “beach,” and many more.
PhonoPix has 10 decks with 40 minimal pairs in each (400 total pairs) for the following phonological processes: prevocalic voicing, word final devoicing, final consonant deletion, fronting (palatal and velar), marked blend reduction, unmarked blend reduction, gliding (“l” and “r” sounds), stopping, backing (palatal and velar), and initial consonant deletion. Children view the minimal pairs in double-sided flashcards by flicking through an album and tapping an around button. In the matching activity, children have fun matching the minimal pairs in three different levels: easy with 3 pairs, medium with 6 pairs, and hard with 10 pairs.
During the flashcard and matching activities, children practice by listening to the recorded audio, recording their voice to self-monitor, and collecting scores (aka data). Scores are collected only for the cards representing the target response. The scores are then saved in the app or exported with information regarding the phonological process practiced.
The flashcard and matching activities include the following features:

As an SLP, I felt misled and disappointed in this App. I was expecting to see a set of minimal pair cards for each of the processes presented in the flashcards, as your sales ad. displayed, without needing to flip the card. This would help students better understand that an incorrect production results in a totally different word. The "sales advertisement" hooked me into buying this expensive app., which otherwise I might not have.
Speech/Lang Path
I was extremely disappointed in this program. I purchased this program because I was impressed with the ArticPix program. This program does not allow side by side comparisons of the minimally paired words in this flash card mode so that students can easily see and hear that they are saying a different word than they intend to say. Plus my version of the PhonoPix does not allow me to rate the student's production in the flash card mode. When the program is in the Memory game mode, it shows the minimal matching pair so fleetingly that it is to quick for many young children to focus on. Then if they pick the correct match, the pair disappears before there is time to say both words and compare the production of each. The matching pairs should be allowed to stay on the screen as long as the therapist wants them to remain. Another disappointment was the limited number of minimal pairs in each group. I feel dupped and clearly should have read other reviews before purchasing a program. I will not make this mistake again.
Decent
This app is decent. The only thing though... it has you push a smile or frown for reinforcement. However, the kids I work with are younger and love to push the frown! It distracts them from actually doing the cards themselves. I also think that it would be great if the app allowed you to import your own pictures and add to the library. It is the best app with minimal pairs out there right now, though.
