Promising, but basic control frustrations
The game is promising, but the controls are frustrating. It plays like a pre-Mario platformer. The character moves at constant velocity without any ramp-up. This makes precise positioning difficult, often requiring multiple taps. There is no forgiveness period when walking off the edge of a surface; normally one gets a few frames where a fall has begun but where one can still initiate a jump. This is especially important in a game like Plushed which has a few jumps at precise distances, and where the visual and collision maps don't fully match. There are plenty of round-appearing corners which are actually sharp, so targeting a rounded surface can lead to nasty falls. There are also a handful of blind falls in Plushed. These are pits which may contain spikes, or which may require visiting. Sometimes exploring the surrounding area to see if there are other exits is the only way to tell. I frequently found myself wishing there were a button to pull the camera down half a screen to check.
I couldn't get past the control issues to start enjoying myself, which is a shame. The art is promising and the pizza and sproinging monsters are a cute concept. The hero and supporting characters are cute and silly enough that I found myself attached to them at once. I'm watching @blacksmithgames on Twitter and really hoping for them to announce some control tweaks.
Fix two things and I
Plushed is a very pretty game with a fair sense of humor about it. I love the look of it, but looks aren't everything. The two things I feel are wrong with the game are in the gameplay.
The first is the one-hit-you're-dead rule of the game. 1st level, not a real problem. 2nd, it gets a bit annoying. 3rd... I stopped after my 40th or so death, because I was tired of replaying old ground from the last checkpoint I'd reached. Not sure I'll resume playing until this is addressed. Either allow for more than one hit, add more checkpoints, or fix what I feel is the second problem.
Second, I'm not bad at games despite dying so often on the 3rd level. MOST of those 40-ish deaths were from the game not registering my tap to jump. Since all that you can do to avoid a one-hit death from fast moving children or square headed unicorns is to time your jump right, when it doesn't respond and you have to slog back through half a level it tends to grate the nerves. If the jumping were fixed I could handle the one-hit-death and the distant checkpoints... dying when I know I should have made it... time after time... grrr.
Fix either of those two things and I expect I'll love the game.
Yay! Finally!
I'm not really sure why I am collecting golden lady bugs or why pizza is falling from trees but I am enjoying it so far. On level 3, the 1 hit death thing is the only thing I don't like so far.
