Description
Calculates how much an item of a given value in US Dollars would cost in a different year - in other words, the effects of consumer price inflation.
Suggested uses: Learn about the effects of inflation over time. Estimate how much you'll pay for living expenses during retirement. Figure how much to save for your child's room & board in college. Amaze folks who say "when I was your age, that only cost a dime..."
It uses consumer price index data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the US Dept of Labor. The user can choose to use the average CPI for a 3-month period or for the whole year. CPI is available from 1913 through the present, and future values are estimated based on historical trends.
The flip-side info screen includes a detailed discussion of how the math works and any assumptions that were made.
