Customer Reviews
Great but...
Great app with great features but why does it need to compress a clip before you can drop it on the timeline when can then not even play it on the timeline until you render. Also it takes 3-4 minutes to render a 30 second clip. The exported clip also has compression artifacts. Until these are fixed I'd rather use iMovie with it's limitations.
Tortuous render time
The app is full of features but I just put together a movie which was composed of 2 video clips and 7 stills and the app took 22 minutes to render a movie that lasted 1:09. That is ridiculous considering I'm using an iPhone 4.
The render time is also unacceptable because you can't preview your movie with applied effects until it is rendered. After seeing the rendered version of my movie I noticed a problem with the pan/zoom I applied to my still clips which I would have fixed if I could have previewed the movie ahead of rendering it.
Either speed up the render time, give an option to render in VGA or let me view the movie as it would render in the final version so potential mistakes can be spotted. Right now I don't see myself using the app again.
Better than iMovie!
Now with HD & access to iPod, iMovie is a waste and pointless. So many more editing options with Reel Director, different fonts, text fades out... The only feature request now is option to upload to other sites (Vimeo, Facebook, Posterous) and background uploading. Rendering is still slow, but so is iMovie.

They keep updating and it now works on my iPad. It does more than iMovie on the iPhone does. You can only use one song in iMovie. iMovies tried to make themes, but it doesn't fade them, and they take up too much space in the video. Apple got my $5, but I'll continue to use Reel Director, and I paid $8 for it.
