Description
Oral motor skills refer to the skills needed for basic functions such as eating and speaking. The muscles in the mouth, jaw, lips and tongue are responsible for smiling, facial expressions, and even swallowing. We know that in order to practice these skills effectively, children need to follow basic directions involving movements of the muscles in their mouths.
Children with Apraxia of Speech, Down syndrome or craniofacial anomalies many times experience difficulties with their oral motor skills.
Smart Oral Motor is a fun and engaging application for children who need a little more entertaining when practicing their oral motor skills. Clever, the duck, provides auditory and visual cues for practicing several oral motor exercises such as:
-Puckering lips
-Making an “o” with the mouth
-Sending a kiss
-Moving tongue to sides
-Puffing cheeks
-Touching cheeks using the tongue
-Moving the tongue up and down
This application includes a total of 15 oral motor exercises, auditory information and fun animations. Parents and therapists have the ability to adjust the number of repetitions per movement as they please.
This application does not replace the need for a full evaluation by a licensed professional such as an occupational therapist or a speech therapist. Therapists will evaluate and provide full guidance on how to best use this application. If parents are working with their therapists in trying to develop a home program for their child, this can be one very user friendly and engaging resource.

Oral motor
I have been looking for a good oral-motor app to use with my students. I thought this might be it. It is not! If I could get my money back, I might be happy! The duck as the main character is not a good idea. Real lips would work so much better. It is difficult to follow the exercises with the duck as an example. Not worth the money!
Engaging
My pediatric patients find this app interesting and rewarding. They are more engaged in the activity than they are when simply following my own example or pictures in a book. They enjoy earning the stars at the top of the screen (however, it disturbs my autistic patient that there seems to be no way to earn a 15th star, an that leaves an empty space in the progress bar. I resolve his concern by giving him an actual star sticker to keep). I'm not a fan of the duck's voice, or of the mysterious brown blob at the left of the scene, however, it doesn't bother the kids, and that's really what it's all about, right?
Great interactive app for working on Oral Motor skills
I have some of the Super Duper flashcards for Oral motor, but I am so happy I found this app! I use this app and Speech Trainer together to work on Oral Motor Skills with my students. Interesting that someone mentions the Duck, yes I wish it was a different animal; but come on! How come you didn't see that before you bought the app. I highly recommend this app as the ONLY app to work on these skills.
