Sounds are sent to your earbuds in real time. Hear what you’d like to hear. Record what you’d like to record!
Works in many situations, around the table at home, watching TV, in lecture halls, at parties, wherever you’d like to hear, or overhear, the people around you!
We have tuned soundAMP to provide you crystal clear sound at the maximum volume possible. And with its advanced technology, it even reduces volume over the limit.
Simple-to-use controls allow you to tune the sound with the equalizer, adjust background sound levels for each situation, and replay the last 30 seconds.
With soundAMP R, record it all -- capture lectures, presentations, interviews, or even important information relayed at a doctor’s appointment. Bookmark the recording to remember important points! Export recordings to your computer.
soundAMP R supports iOS4 multitasking, so you can listen with soundAMP while checking your email, reviewing your calendar, surfing the web, viewing your photos and performing other tasks. When you start recording and then leave the app, it will keep recording. The new graphics take advantage of iPhone 4 high resolution screen. It’s beautiful!
Notes:
* Multitasking works on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3rd & 4th generations.
* To achieve highest volume levels when using iOS4, turn off “Volume Limit”. To turn it off, go to Settings, iPod, Volume Limit.
* Works best with wired headsets, headphones & microphones.
* The A2DP stereo Bluetooth profile is *not* supported due to operating system restrictions. Devices that support both HFP and A2DP will default to monaural HFP. Quality varies greatly among HFP devices.
* iPod touch 2nd generation requires a headset with mic.
* soundAMP does not amplify phone calls or music.

Excellent tool - must explore settings
Basically, this app amplifies and/or records environmental sounds, including speech. I'm using it on an iPad. I'm a speech-language pathologist and I just discovered this app. It's very easy to use, but it takes some exploring - the makers seem to think people will already understand what this is and how it works, so my main criticism would be lack of in-app instruction/examples.
The app starts "listening" as soon as it's launched -- you must wear earbuds/headset in order to get the full effect of amplification. There are settings for Right and Left ear, and general high freqency/low frequency loudness settings -- these are the things that an average user might not guess at first glance. Once you know what the +/- sliders do, it's amazingly effective. For example, it's possible to primarily amplify high frequency sounds (e.g., speech sounds like s, f, th).
Besides amplification, the recording option is simple and handy. Record a short or long period of speech (depends on capacity of your device) at low, med, or high quality. Easy play back - just touch the waveform line in the place you want to playback - no need to fast forward or rewind to listen over and over. The Multitasking option even works on the iPad, meaning I can run this app and be recording and/or amplifying WHILE I'm doing something else on the iPad (like having a client talk about a picture on the iPad).
I decided to write a review because some of the low ratings below. This app is working well for me - not sure whether people below had unreasonable expectations (this is NOT a hearing aid) or just didn't know how to configure/use the app.
this is 'almost' as good as a hearing aid
I've worn a $2k hearing aid before - while THAT is better, this application is a close second. I'm using a 2nd Gen iPod Touch and it works just like stated. It's a bit distracting because the mic is close to the listener - so my voice is loud, but with an iPhone you would have the mic away from the listener and I think that would be much better. So far my co-workers love it, because I haven't said "what" all day. Battery life is about 4 hours on the Touch because it will not work in sleep mode. This might be enough to make me give up my Blackberry for an iPhone. A 4.99 app so I can hear people? Wow. Awesome.
Hearing impaired
Excellent app esp. for the price. Would suggest 2 additions:
1. A limiter that kicks in to attenuate sudden loud sounds. This is the major advantage of my ha over soundamp.
2. More amplification. There are some apps out that can get more volume than this one. Some of us need it.
I have recc'd this to numerous hearing impaired friends and audiologists.
