Good, But...
I rarely take the time to write a review, but there is an aspect of this game that really frustrates and borders on angering me. While I do like this game in general, either the developers have a sadistic side to themselves or there is a flaw in the app.
When your spider reaches a certain level, dragonflies become one of the options for the spider to capture and eat. Unlike the other insects that are served up as the spider's fare, dragonflies are able to struggle themselves free when they are caught in a web. In the first number of levels where dragonflies are present, once they are actually trapped in a web, the spider can capture them as long as he is persistent.
However, I have gotten to a point in the game where it does not matter (1) how much time my spider spends trying to capture the dragonflies that are caught in a web, (2) how web-filled the room is, (3) nor how close my spider is to the dragonflies when they land and are captured by a web...it is simply not possible for the spider to capture the dragonflies. Unless there is a programming flaw, which I think could be possible, it would appear the developers derive some sadistic pleasure from this endless cat-and-mouse game between the spider and the dragonflies.
If a dragonfly lands in a web and the spider is several inches away and remains motionless, the dragonfly will struggle for some time before gaining it's freedom. If, however, the spider begins to approach, the dragonfly, irrespective of how long it has been stuck, immediately frees itself every single time...the spider never stands a chance. It does not bother me that the spider would have to be very persistent and work diligently for its meal--as the levels increase, the game SHOULD become more challenging.
At some point, however, enough is enough. My spider (I) spent about 20 minutes pursuing two dragonflies around a very small area before eventually giving up. They did not move very far because once they freed themselves from one web, they were immediately caught in another web directly adjacent to the first web. The dragonflies frequently found themselves captured in a web where they landed right on top of or immediately in front of the spider, but even if the dragonfly remained stuck to the web while the spider was right on top of it trying to salvage its meal, the dragonfly continually was able to free itself.
Since it generally is not necessary to capture every insect before you are allowed to move on to the next level, not being able to capture the dragonflies should normally not preclude you from advancing to the next level, that is, as long as you are able to capture everything else. Being unable to capture the dragonflies does, however, make it impossible to get a perfect score in terms of the number of captured insects--something in most levels that is very attainable.
Also, because dragonflies are worth 3,000 points each while most other insects are worth only 500-1,000 points, your numerical score also suffers by not being able to capture the dragonflies. Lastly, I simply do not see the point to making it impossible for the spider to capture the dragonflies. It is one thing to create a challenging gaming situation--that I appreciate, respect, and, quite frankly, expect. I (or should I say my spider!) however, abhor being taunted with no apparent purpose nor hope for success.
Important note to the developers
For a fan of the original iPhone edition, this game was VERY difficult to find! When I first got my iPad, I searched "spider: the secret of Bryce manor". This did NOT turn up the ipad edition. I then searched "spider" and this didn't show the game anywhere. I concluded that there was no HD edition; it wasnt until a full 2 months later that I was recommended the app by a friend. There is no way I could've known the truncated title! You almost inadvertently lost my sale, and I'd hate to see this excellent piece of software suffer for a search issue!
So creative and captivating!
The fun in moving the spider.....making it jump and run.....and eating bugs in a variety of ways is only half the fun. The backdrop of a mystery story is the other. The music and graphics are excellent. It is challenging and offers an optional outcome of subsequent levels based on your choices in the previous ones.
I have played this 3 times and saved pictures of the rooms and clues and still trying to piece together the story. This is the biggest challenge as there seems to be multiple story foundations.
I was slightly disappointed that after completion of the game, there was no add up of the story based on the clues I found. Nothing to compare it to. It appears to be anyone's guess and imagination as to what the story is based on interpretation of the clues. I wish the game play results sketched the story or partial story for you.
