Good tool for struggling learners

Story Builder uses pictures and questioning techniques to illicit responses from the user. The user is able to record their responses into the device, which is complied into a "story", based on answering the comprehension questions. The user is then able to e-mail the response. There are some customizations in the audio and visual, however, there is no speech-to -text integration, nor is there the ability to take data on the responses, or rubric to measure the effectiveness of the responses. I think this is a great app to use in pre-teaching, or reinforcement of comprehension skills, especially in Speech Therapy. I would like to see the ability to have more control over customizations, a menu indicating what pictures are on the app (ie trajectory of lessons), and the ability to take data in some fashion. I would also like to have the ability to use my own pictures and record the questions as well.

Great for young learners

This is a great program for young learners who are beginning to talk about picture scenes. The program provides a nice variety of scenes and questions to help get the child talking. I played this with a 5 year old with PDD who was able prior to this to make sole statements about occurrences in pictures, and simple statements about emotions based on facial expressions. My student also reads at a 1st grade level, so she could make use of the textual prompts. She needed some help to speak after starting the recording, but enjoyed it and asked for more.

StoryBuilder review

I like the ability to email the stories. Students love to share with their parents! I would give it 5 stars if the prompts were read out loud for Level 1 and if there was a bit more customization so we could have stories that play to the student's interests. This can be done by skipping the picture at the first prompt but you don't know what's coming for the next stories until you see the picture. The story builder does have scaffolding so as students learn how to build the story, they can have less prompting.
