Strange Rain turns your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch into a skylight on a rainy day. Raindrops fall and splatter on your screen, shifting perspective as you tilt your device. Touch the screen and guide the path of the raindrops, stepping through the notes of an eerie melody as you go. It’s a relaxing, intriguing experience that feels as if you’re holding a living window in your hands.

The more you touch, however, the more strange the rain becomes: layered skies, visual anomalies and shifts in speed and color, even the occasional cataclysm if you’re not careful. Before your eyes and beneath your fingers, the familiar becomes strange, and the strange, familiar.

Strange Rain has three play modes. In "wordless" mode, you can simply enjoy the sights and sounds of the falling rain. In "whispers" mode, touching the screen causes some raindrops to turn into words as they fall—words inspired by the qualities of rain.

In "story" mode, every touch triggers a thought as text on screen. These thoughts tell the story of a man in the midst of a family crisis who has wandered into the rain to collect his thoughts. His world, too, has gone from familiar to strange, even as his beliefs are following the opposite course. Your interaction helps determine when and how he decides to come in from the rain.

Strange Rain features interactive music that responds directly to your touch. In addition to the default music included with the original release, two additional scores by composers Chris Schlarb and Michael Gordon Shapiro can now be downloaded for free within the app.

A unique combination of touchscreen play and interactive storytelling, the living sky of Strange Rain awaits your touch.

Great rain app

Authentic rain look and sounds.

Only complaint: wish there was a way to turn off the associated low sound of the rain hitting plastic/covering. That is the only sound that doesn't fit. Would be nice just to have the rain hitting the ground sound alone - same way most people hear it out their window.

Innovative and mesmerizing

This app is whatever you want it to be. You can just watch the rain. You can interact with the rain and experiment with the music-- or not. The graphics are beautiful and the rain sounds are better than those in most apps in the oversaturated "nature sounds" genre. But this app can be much more, if you're open to it...
The most special thing about this for me is the story-- "electronic literature" will be my next websearch rabbithole; I can tell that already. Just a really creative idea, in an interface that lures you into the storyteller's stream-of-consciousness. The possibilities for this app are endless and the developers seem to encourage that via occasional suggestions. Make this app what you will.

My only gripe is that it's connected to GameCenter, that pesky wart of a program that I stash in a folder called "crAPPs." The achievements (using that term verrrry loosely) in this app are optional and not really quantifiable. GameCenter, Don't Kill My Vibe. Please make that sign-in intro screen go away!

A year later, why isn't this updated

If my app was voted one of the most innovative I'd want to keep it up. I keep looking because the core of it, the rain, is wonderful. And rain is not depressing. It's elemental. It refreshes all. It's insulting to wait yet another whole year and get nothing. This had so much potential and now even the rain is not worth it. Same depressing story, I can only guess the guy who wrote this is the hit and run driver and is in prison. What happened to being able to put our own poetry in? So bye bye stupid rain.
