Apple's App of the Week and current Staff Favourite.
A simpler way to browse and search the web.
Summly offers you a simpler way to browse and search the web by automatically summarising search results, webpages and news articles. This makes content easier to consume and ensures search results are relevant and can be easily evaluated.
Summly helps you to:
- Find what you're looking for faster
- Save time when searching and browsing the web
- Crystallise key information
- Overcome information overload
Summly's inbuilt Search Service provides specialised search results that are automatically summarised, saving you time and energy when browsing the web. Summly is integrated into Mobile Safari and other well known applications which utilise our public API.
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have tested Summly’s patent pending summarisation technology, demonstrating that it outperforms the highest academically published results by a factor of up to 30%. Summly's technology is state-of-the-art and yields extremely accurate and precise results through AI, Machine Learning and Ontology techniques.
Summly is language-independent and can summarise web content in all languages. The sentences included in the summary are selected using Summly's metrics and specialised coherence algorithm.
Summly works best with news articles and search results that are written in an informative style, as opposed to a narrative.
The Search Service contains results that are selected especially to be topical and summarised.

Just doesn't work.
The app really doesn't work all that well. Whatever algorithm it uses ends up choosing weird sentences. Then again, rarely do writers end up perfectly summarizing their work in just a few sentences. The app is a neat concept, but attempts to accomplish its goal by a method that rarely works, and does so poorly.
My experience was 90% this..
"Unfortunately, Summly could not create a summary of the web page you entered since its content is already in a concise form of 500 characters or less."
After consistently seeing this message after almost every load attempt, across the vast World Wide Web, I was able to determine- to figure out that it's a type of code-speak, meaning: DELETE.
So, that's what I did. And honestly,
I think its happier now, I really do..
More of a Toy than a Tool.
Summly has some serious potential. Unfortunately the information that it does pull it next to useless. I guess I can use it to figure out if an article is worth reading at all. I don't think that's what's it's original purpose/intent is.
