Great potential but too basic to be useful...
This app has a simple design and is easy to use. It has so much potential but TeuxDeux is unusable for me because it is too simple and allows for no customization or flexibility. Every time you open the app it will sync automatically. This is a real pain because user can't turn off this feature. When I don't have wifi I have to wait about 10 seconds every time to try and enter a task and then it gives me an error message which is a real pain. This app has no notes, folders, repeating tasks, subtasks, iPad app, or anything special about it except that it looks simple and is easy to use. This is a bare bones basic app. I love simplicity but sometimes developers take this design philosophy too far and the app becomes unusable. You will quickly outgrow this app and long for some functional options. I now use an app called 2Do which offers a good balance between functionality and simplicity.
background sync
Teuxdeux.com is the best todo list since Palm Desktop on OS 9. I'm totally serious & obsessive with task management software to the point of personality flaw.
But when you launch this iPhone app you are locked out while it syncs (maybe 10 seconds).
The larger problem is when you don't have a data connection it takes 30 SECONDS to figure out your offline! Crazy bad; I'm not sure what to do. This may be my favorite todo list but that bottleneck is huge. Add background syncing & I'll rate it 5 star.
Update: didn't fix in the new version.
Simple is nice, but not without problems
I love this app and have used it for several months now. I like it so much that I could no longer use more feature-rich apps like Things or ToDo, because they just feel clumsy in comparison. But that doesn't mean TeuDeux is perfect. Here are the pros and cons:
Pros
Gorgeous look. Always beautiful to look at. You never have to guess at what things mean or how to do something because of the clean, elegant interface. It does one thing and one thing only, but that's exactly why I like it so much. It's also fast to use. The sync feature is great, but also has a big shortcoming -- this will be discussed later. Want to add a new To Do? Piece of cake! You don't need to set a dozen attributes and visit multiple screens for that like you have to do in other apps (I exaggerate but you get the point).
Cons
There are some annoying issues. First, when you launch the app, it syncs automatically. I can understand why, since you want to know that you're working with the most recent data. But for people who might never use the browser version, that's a royal pain, as it can take several seconds before you can actually start using it. This needs to be a configurable setting.
Second, I sometimes wonder how often the designers actually use it themselves, because of a minor interface quirk that should have been addressed long ago. When you enter a new item, it logically gets added to the end of the priority list. That's to be expected. When you try to move it to the top, it's frustrating because the screen doesn't just scroll like you would expect. Because you can drag the item back into the text field for editing, it won't scroll. So you have to move it up three lines, then scroll, then move it up three more lines, etc. Royal hassle, and completely unnecessary. After a couple of seconds, it should assume that you aren't going to drag into the edit field and start scrolling instead.
Finally, my last negative is that when you reorder items they never seem to go where you expect. There is a line indicating where it should go to next, but when you release, it always ends up 1 or 2 lines below that, or doesn't move at all! This is truly a bug and needs to be corrected.
Still, even though it might seem that I'm complaining, I still love this app enough to recommend it. As I said, I've already removed more expensive, more feature-rich apps because this one is better suited to how I use a ToDo list. Fix those three things and it would be a perfect, 5-star app.
