Yep, send free texts from an iPod touch or iPhone to any US mobile phone. Replies come free too! The Lite version has ads, and a daily message limit (15 a day for now--hey it’s free!). Textfree Unlimited (paid version) has no daily limits.

CAN I RECEIVE TEXTS FREE TOO?

SHOULD I UPGRADE TO UNLIMITED?
If you’re a heavy texter, Textfree Unlimited might be right for you. It does away with the daily message limits. Plus, you get a ton more text tones and fun conversation screen themes and you can assign different ones to each friend.
DOES IT WORK ON IPOD TOUCH?
Sure, just make sure you’re on WiFi and then you can even exchange messages without a phone!
REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF
- Your friends not on Textfree pay regular charges for texts sent and received--nothing extra.
- If your friend’s phone can’t send texts to an email, have them try using the MMS or picture messaging app. Regular carrier rates apply.

WOW! Simple, elegant... and FREEEE!
This application is very well done. I was able to send text messages to my friends... and they got it quickly. They were able to send me replies... and I do not have to pay for anything... No set-up! It starts working right away.
Works great on my iPhone and iPod Touch.
Now I have a good reason to put phone numbers on my iPod Touch.
P.S. If it continue to work so well, I'll buy their unlimited app for $6... and I'll be saving a lot on my wireless bill.
Perfect so far
I just had a conversation i have found the login on this app is fast, it works perfect on an iPod touch, it's free, and has an attractive interface. What's not to love?
The only problem I've had is I type to long of messages to my friends. :-)
Excellent app, when apple allows background processes on the SDK then I will buy the full version, though the email notification of new messages is pretty nice.
Verdict: Great app, best of it's kind.

This app is great! I only wish u could send pictures along with it. Otherwise, this is one of my favorites and I can't wait to buy the full version!
