Description

Named after the ancient Greek muse of history, Clio puts history at your fingertips. With your permission, Clio picks up your present location and guides you to landmarks, museums, and historic sites. It also acts as a virtual time machine, allowing a user to see images and videos and hear and read about historic events that happened around them. We are adding new features including interactive walking/driving tours and push notifications coming soon.

Because Clio is free, it depends upon people like you who care about history and culture. If you would like to help, please send us an email at clio@theclio.com We are working to provide new features like push notifications and interactive walking tours thanks to donations and other forms of support. The Clio Foundation is recognized as a public charity under IRS code 501c3 and all donations are tax deductible.

With several hundred new entries and improvements being added each month, Clio is not only a website and smartphone application, but also a collaborative research, interpretation, and map-building project. Museum professionals, scholars, and their students contribute most of Clio’s content. We also depend upon local history experts and museum volunteers who often know more about local history than anyone else. Each day, this partnership of local history experts and professional historians is building a comprehensive, dynamic, and interactive map of American history.

The most important app you can have on your phone

This interactive and educational app allows local stories to be told. It shows how important every person is in making sure that accurate and representative stories are told when it comes to history. Clio brings these stories to life and allows for the user to engage further than ever before with history.

Before I got to college, the history that was generally taught was "pop culture". They were stories and representations that painted an overall general narrative of American History. What has always fascinated me about history, were the stories that weren't well known. They gave better insight to what the average person or less represented communities were encountering compared to "mainstream history".

Clio is a necessary tool to help engage and enlighten individuals, as well as, connect them to the history around them

Excellent resource

This app is an excellent resource for locating and learning about historical sites and museums in the United States. It makes history accessible and highlights just how much history actually surrounds us, often in the most unlikely of places. From obscure historical markers mounted on buildings or in public parks, to well-known national historic landmarks and museums large and small, Clio is an indispensable guide to U.S. historic sites. Download the app before your next visit to a major U.S. city and enjoy a self-guided heritage walking tour. It might even make you start to look differently at the streets you traverse daily in the neighborhoods, towns, and cities where you live.

Incredible Gateway to History

I’ve started to discover history all around me that I couldn’t believe was there. When I’m visiting a new place for the first time, this is the kind of stuff I’m looking for—it’s just so nice to have it all in a one-stop shop (figuratively, since Clio is free and non-profit).

Since discovering Clio, I’ve become a regular contributor. The platform keeps getting better as more and more knowledgeable folks contribute. The Tour creation feature is especially amazing. Sure, the UI could be snazzier, but it’s absolutely the best platform out there for discovering history everywhere you go. Keep it up, Clio!
