Finally, a hidden object game for the iphone!
I'm a fan of hidden object games and was wondering when we'd see the first on the iPhone and also how it would go. I usually wait for some reviews before I get an app, but there were none and I've been waiting for just such a game. And so far, I'm quite happy!
You may have played this if you frequent Big Fish or one of the other sites for games. This is a port of the same game for PC, which you can find at BFG if you want to try before you buy, and there is also a review on Gamezebo. Keep in mind, the review is of the PC version, and that's what you'll download and try, but for all intents and purposes, this is exactly the same. The bonus for me is that it was one of the few HO games I haven't yet played. It has a story, and great graphics, which concerned me since the iphone really isn't that big. You can zoom in and scroll, which are key, and which work very well. There are mini-puzzles interspersed throughout, which is something you're familiar with if you play HO games. That's a nice element since it adds some variety. So far, the mini-games (or the one I've gotten to) seem simple, but again, that's fine since the main object is finding objects. The sound is good, it loads very quickly, and I haven't encountered a hitch. It plays as I would expect it to on a PC (or Mac), and for that, and the fact that it's a hidden object game, I give it 5 stars. I'm used to getting even my HO games for $5.99 but splurged this time. I suppose it can be said that the price is fair considering some sites charge a whopping $19.99 for this and similar games. Still, I like to think that the app store venue will soon drop some prices down to make things accessible to a larger audience. Be that as it may, I'm very happy that this is here, and hope that there are many others soon to follow!
Hidden Objects Games Work Extremely Well on iPhone who'd've thunk
Stone of Destiny is an well designed with much attention to detail. My biggest question was will this Hidden Object Genre work on iPhone / iPod Touch or not.
Typically these games for PC/Mac range from $6 to $20. I pay $8 for bigfishgames for Mac versions. I'm very picky too as I will not buy one that is 800x600 and it's too small on my 20" iMac screen. Only 1024x768 and still won't go full screen as once you distort the image it makes finding hidden objects even harder.
I tried out Mystery Millionaire Heir on Nintendo DS with bated breath and it was a total flop. It was too small even the screen and the contrast ratio didn't work well as many of the darker objects were simply too dark to even have a remote chance of finding. Also way to much vertically scrolling required because of the two screens. It had a gimmicky flashlight mode, etc. Most screens had only 5 objects to find. Thus Nintendo DS I think it has no hope for hidden object games.
Stone of Destiny for iPhone I saw it drop from $10 to $9. Not really tempting to me as I had no idea what it'd be like even from screenshots. When it hit $1 for one day (Sep 30th) I jumped on it.
How does it play? Double tap to zoom in and out, pan around with one finger, clues disappear once found at bottom of translucent bar. The brightness of the screen even looking at it from angles doesn't distort your view. 10 objects to find per location. If you run out of time and have to start over it mixes up the clues so even though your at the same location you have, generally, new objects to find. Tapping many times randomly will time penalize you. It has mini games like Untangle, Tower of Hanoi, Block Puzzle. Create up to 5 game profiles. Always plays in landscape mode. Flipping phone around will rotate 180 degrees. Can turn off music volume off if you wish to listen to own music. Double tap Home button on iPhone after turning off music in Stone of Destiny to start up own music playing.
So if I had a choice between playing this on my Mac at 800x600 or iPhone which would I get? Honestly I'd get iPhone version. If it was 1024x768 I would definitely opt for the Mac version. So what is the price point for these hidden object games that I would actually buy them for. I'm hoping they settle at around a $5 price point.
Best Game Ever
This game is so worth the money . . . it has little movies, awesome variety, fabulous execution. By far my favorite App. Other ones I like are Naked Faces, Kaleido, 3D Pong and Chimps Ahoy!
