Retina Icon, Still Not Retina Map

Well they made the icon retina quality for the iPad but they are still using low resolution Bing maps which is disappointing. And the new version has larger ads, of course. So if you already have the free version installed, don't bother with this “upgrade.” Otherwise the app works fine, the typeface on the forecasts etc. are quite sharp and legible, transitions are fluid. Well done over all, again just need better map face.

Solid app, poor marketing decisions.

Update 5/21/12:

Hooray for the retina update! This app looks gorgeous on my new iPad and remains the best designed weather app for iPad in my opinion. However, there are still two glaring omissions that keep this app from being rated five stars. First, though all the artwork in the app was updated to the high resolution of the new iPad, the maps remain low resolution and rather ugly. This wouldn't be such a big deal except that the weather map is displayed so prominently in the app. The other remaining issue is the lack of push notifications (also missing from the iPhone app). It would be really nice to get severe weather alerts without having to open the app. Fixing both of these issues will earn this app a fifth star. Still a great app overall though!

Original review:

Ok, let me preface this by saying that this app had already become free by the time I had gotten my iPad. As a result, I'm not one of those people having to pay twice to remove the ads. To be fair to the developers, the app was only pay for two days before becoming free. It was then free for nearly 10 months before the in-app purchase to remove ads was implemented. Given the short time the app was pay and how much time has passed since, I don't think the developer's decision to add the in-app purchase was meant to be a slap in the face to anyone. The problem is that Apple does not have a mechanism for people who bought the app when it first came out to receive a credit toward the in-app purchase. The developer could make things right by offering customers who already paid an iTunes gift card or something, but this would probably be difficult logistically. In any case, I think people are letting their anger artificially lower the rating of what is a solid app overall.

This app has the best layout of any of the iPad weather apps I have tried. The map is large and has a bunch of different options (radar, satellite, temperature, etc.), and can be easily zoomed in. At the top (or on the side depending on the orientation) are different panels for things like current conditions, hourly and daily forecasts, alerts, etc. Each of these becomes larger when tapped on and gives much information. Personally, I think this is an excellent system, as it gives you a good deal of information at a glance and detailed information is never more than one tap away. There are ads, which can be removed via the controversial in-app purchase option. However, the ads are not particularly intrusive, and I have not yet found myself wanting to cough up $5 to remove them.

All this being said, this app is definitely not perfect. The biggest omission is the lack of push notifications for weather alerts. Almost every other top-end weather app has them, why not weatherbug? This feature must be added before I will rate this app 5 stars. I have also experienced some bugs with radar images not loading. Although this only happens occasionally, it is very irritating to not be able to see an approaching storm because the radar would not load. Lastly, I really do want to support the developer by paying to remove the ads. However, $5 seems a bit steep when most other apps charge $2-3 to remove ads. Lower the price a bit and I'll gladly pay to show my support.

Overall, this is a solid free weather app if you don't mind ads (or paying to remove them). Definitely recomended.

My Favorite Weather App

I frequently track the weather on my iPad and WeatherBug is my favorite free option. I like its "no nonsense" design that gives me the maps and info I want immediately.
