Description

Wordy is the quickest and easiest way to get definitions, synonyms and more. Simply search for a word to get information aggregated from several reputable resources, including Merriam-Webster, Century Dictionary, and American Heritage Dictionary. Wordy is one of the only portable word resources that searches for definitions in so many places!

Even better, Wordy helps you improve your diction by providing a unique, interesting, and pertinent "Word of the Day" every week day (we take the weekends off the play word games and read the dictionary).

Please note: Wordy requires an internet connection to fetch word information.

Customer Reviews

Excellent start to a practical app!

Here is where I stood before Wordy was released… I am one of a dying breed (or so it seems) that regularly employs the advice of an old "once-burdensome to carry around" friend, the dictionary.

I found that, while the built-in dictionary of iOS 5+ was a welcomed feature, it felt limited and lacking, to say the least. It serves its purpose as a useful quick reference or spot checker. Of course, there are times when I would rather double check my understanding of a word than to simply throw caution to the wind and risk using a horribly misplaced and out-of-context word. It is fine for this basic purpose.

Then, there are those times when I come across a word that I either: 1) have never seen, it's brand new to me 2) I "somewhat" know the meaning of 3) I know, but I'd like to flesh out the various atypical usage scenarios or alternate meanings.

This required that I use a third-party app to handle the task (likely either the "blue one" or the "red one" for those who get me). Personally, I kept both on hand, because at times one would contain the info that I was looking for, while the other did not. This was a common thing, and I thought little more of it than a nuisance.

Queue the knight in shining armor: Wordy! I gave it a shot in the dark chance and I'm glad that I did! What did it do that none of my current go-to's didn't? Well, to begin, the most important function to me: enumeration of multiple reference sources, presenting them in one clean, abridged (though only of clutter, not vital content) listing. This, alone, instantly won me over— but the "icing on the cake" so to speak was the gorgeous, yet, simple interface. Admittedly, had this been an eyesore, it would have lost a lot of points with me, but thankfully, this was no issue! Synonyms and antonyms; fantastic. This closely fills my other need in such an app: a thesaurus. Often, I find myself with an acceptable word (insofar as the meaning) but not the "word I'm looking for", as we all do— hence, the inspiration behind the thesaurus, right? Haha…

With the latest update, I have seen the addition of the pronunciation of the word (always wecomed); citation of the reference sources (seems to be more of a moral expectation or necessity for the developer in that no one wants to see this great utility taken away over plagiarism complaints, etc— wise move); along with other enhancements that I have yet to notice (my glance through the 2nd edition was a brief scan demanded by my own curiosity).

I cannot agree with some of the poor reviews/ratings, since, to me, I would consider this app to make my personal list of "best new/fresh apps" or "most promising apps". I have been through a ton (to be modest) of apps, so few are able to catch my attention these days. Wordy was able to, though, and I will continue to watch its development.

I thank the developer for making an app worthy of praise! Keep up the good work! Try to keep it clean and fast— to me, a frequently overlooked, but equally important property. The most useful app in the world becomes a useless app if I can't run it without bringing everything else to a grinding halt! Nothing quite as potent as that (save for frequent crashing) in the "deal breaker" department. I've not experienced that with this app yet, so my five stars are well-earned.

Terrific App

Just awesome. Intuitive and elegant. Everything a good app should be! ET

Fabulous update. This update makes this the best dictionary app out there. Kudos to the developer.

Support for the dev team and suggestions

Five stars to support you guys for giving us more updates. This app is aesthetically pleasing. I love the synonym and antonym buttons. Please give us a mechanism such as hearts or stars to let us favorite words we can review for later.
