Better And Better!
UPDATE REVIEW: Added another star because the developer incorporated, as promised, TextExpander support. So far, Writie is stable and reliable. The only feature I can suggest for improving this already excellent tool might be an enhanced virtual keyboard with an additional line of compact keys to add professional writers' keystrokes, such as "curly quotes" and em dashes, plus cursor movements, etc. But it would have to done artfully to preserve precious screen real estate!
ORIGINAL REVIEW: The developer's premise for creating this app is valid. It is certainly easier if reference materials (often web-based) are visible on screen while you write. But most apps that permit sharing screen space with the internet limit themselves to web clippings that look good but their words may not be easily integrated into the document being written.
Writie takes a better approach. An internal browser as well as Instapaper menu -- app and monthly subscription must be separately purchased -- are available on the right side of its landscape view. A Copy command option will instantly move selected text to the document. Neat and efficient!
File management is restricted to a single set (no nesting) of folders but Dropbox syncing is included. So far, this app is functioning correctly and the developer promises TextExpander support soon. In summary, it appears to be a promising writer's tool, soon to be enhanced with upgrades. What remains to be discovered is if Writie is solid and reasonably free of frustrating startup bugs. Here's hoping!
Very Useful Research/Writing Tool
I have a couple of other split-screen, web/text editor apps for iPad. This is the most useful for me because the Instapaper integration is done very well, and the $1 a month subscription to Instapaper is worth the price for me.
EDIT: I gave it another star after actually using this app for a while. It really does a fantastic job of split-screen writing from resource material.
