In 1999, hip-hop producers/DJs Prince Paul and Dan “The Automator” Nakamura collaborated for the goofy conceptual project Handsome Boy Modeling School. With a moniker inspired by the obscure Chris Elliott sitcom GET A LIFE, fake personas named Chest Rockwell and Nathaniel Merriwether, and guest appearances by everyone from the Beastie Boys’ Mike D to Cibo Matto, Handsome Boy’s 1999 debut, SO… HOW’S YOUR GIRL? was an instant college-radio cult success. However, the fictional duo took five years until their follow-up, WHITE PEOPLE, focusing on a variety of side projects in the intervening time, including Paul’s work with MC Paul Barman and Nakamura’s success with Deltron 3030 and Gorillaz.
