About Love and Rockets

Two years after goth godfathers Bauhaus broke up in 1983, guitarist Daniel Ash and the fraternal rhythm section of bassist David J and drummer Kevin Haskins formed Love and Rockets, continuing their mission of crafting tunes for dancing in the darkness. While the band was ostensibly Bauhaus minus lead singer Peter Murphy, their music was far from gloomy. With their 1985 debut single, a thrumming rock cover of The Temptations’ “Ball Of Confusion,” off Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven, the psychedelic “Kundalini Express” from 1986’s eclectic Express, and the hard-clapping “No New Tale to Tell” off 1987’s Earth Sun Moon, the band pushed post-punk into the light. Much to the shock of fans and band alike, the energetic 1989 single “So Alive” hit No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The group never repeated that success and slowly drifted back to being Bauhaus. However, they did reward their loyal fans in 2007 with sing-along performances at Lollapalooza and Coachella before splitting up again two years later.
