Biography

Offering a curious but tasty stew of musical influences (quirky pop, prog, indie rock, alt-country) and humorous conceits (including songs about Alan Watts, Princess Diana, and the Son of God), Boston's Self Righteous Brothers were formed in 2003 by Max Koepke, Jake Hal, and Justin McLean, all three of whom trade off on a wide variety of guitars, keyboards, and percussion instruments. In 2004, the trio recorded an EP, The Squirrel of Life, and set out on their first tour in tandem with another Boston band, Apollo Sunshine. The Self Righteous Brothers soon earned a potent local reputation for their eclectic musical approach, over-the-top life shows (featuring bizarre props and costumes), and eccentric covers of hits of the '80s. In 2005, the band expanded their lineup to better re-create their offbeat musical vision on-stage, adding Jesse Gallagher on keyboards, Sam Cohen on pedal steel guitar, and Kevin Corzett and Brian Schreck on saxophones. In 2007, the Self Righteous Brothers released their first fell-length album, In Loving Memory, distributed by the Los Angeles-based independent label Black and Greene Records.
