Crying Freedom

A young woman struggles to find courage amid danger and political intrigue in this fact-based illustrated story for adults. Vivi’s story is both tender and terrifying as she attempts to reconcile her love for her brothers with the pull of an inter-generational quest to free their ancient homeland from a horrific military occupation. 


Vivi's journey is set against the true-to-life backdrop of a global conspiracy to hide corporate plunder, religious persecution, repression and genocide in the massive but well-hidden nation of West Papua. Covering half of the world's second largest island, West Papua rivals the Amazon for its biological and cultural diversity as well as its relevance to climate change.

 

Crying Freedom (previously called Vanishing Tribes) was created by artists, activists and academics from four continents as a tribute to fifty years of nonviolent civil resistance in West Papua. It contains 60 paintings and illustrations as well as 50 pop-up footnotes for readers who want to learn more about this little-known but critically important part of the world and the astonishing bravery of its peace-loving heroes.
