Publisher Description

Townsfolk called him devil. For dark and enigmatic Julian, Earl of Ravenwood, was a man with a legendary temper and a first wife whose mysterious death would not be forgotten. Some said the beautiful Lady Ravenwood had drowned herself in the black, murky waters of Ravenwood Pond. Others whispered of foul play and the devil's wrath.

Now country-bred Sophy Dorring is about to become Ravenwood's new bride. Drawn to his masculine strength and the glitter of desire that burned in his emerald eyes, the tawny-haired lass had her own reasons for agreeing to a marriage of convenience. One was vengeance, and in its pursuit she would entangle Julian in a blackmail plot, a duel at dawn, and a dangerous masquerade. The other reason was dearer to her heart, but just as wild a quest: Sophy Dorring intended to teach the devil to love again.

A Mostly Dependable Recipe

Many romance writers have a tried-and-true set of archetypal characters and storylines they dress up with world-building; familiar characters begin with the same flaws and grow along a predictable path to an equally formulaic happy ending.

Writing under various pseudonyms, the author manages to add a flair to the process by purposely putting these characters and storylines into different timelines - regency, noir, contemporary and futuristic settings. Quick/Castle/Krentz has more than one set of heroes, heroines, and settings, but you’ll begin to recognize the repetition and its intent if you read enough examples.

This regency includes what I would consider to be one of the author’s less pleasant archetype pairings: a controlling and thoroughly unlikeable male who lacks trust in the female gender, and a flighty female who causes a series of upsets which lead to the male discovering that he can trust this particular female. His controlling is, of course, really just an outlet for his ‘protectiveness,’ and being a pregnant and coddled wife is what the female always wanted anyway.

While I’m not a fan of the setup in this case, the author’s heroines are often in the business of saving ‘their’ men, and the scenarios are always cottage-core: you know that good will overcome evil and that the girl will get the guy. It works, doubly so because the author’s unique style and voice are comfortably recognizable, ever-present and done well.
