Publisher Description
ONCE IN NINE LIVES, SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY HAPPENS.
The last thing Gwen Cooper wanted was another cat. She already had two, not to mention a phenomenally underpaying job and a recently broken heart. Then Gwen’s veterinarian called with a story about a three-week-old eyeless kitten who’d been abandoned. It was love at first sight.
Everyone warned that Homer would always be an “underachiever.” But the kitten nobody believed in quickly grew into a three-pound dynamo with a giant heart who eagerly made friends with every human who crossed his path. Homer scaled seven-foot bookcases with ease, survived being trapped alone for days after 9/11 in an apartment near the World Trade Center, and even saved Gwen’s life when he chased off an intruder who broke into their home in the middle of the night. But it was Homer’s unswerving loyalty, his infinite capacity for love, and his joy in the face of all obstacles that transformed Gwen’s life. And by the time she met the man she would marry, she realized that Homer had taught her the most valuable lesson of all: Love isn’t something you see with your eyes.
BONUS: This edition contains a new afterword and an excerpt from Gwen Cooper's Love Saves the Day.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Cooper had every intention of saying "no" to the veterinarian who asked her if she was interested in adopting a four-week-old stray kitten with a "particular handicap." She was fresh off a bad breakup, working a low-paying job and living rent-free in a friend's bedroom plus she was worried about the social implications of adding one cat to the two she had already adopted: "The neighborhood kids will... say things like 'That's where Old Widow Cooper, the cat lady, lives.' " But as soon as she picked up the tiny kitten and he started to purr, she caved. She settled on a name and brought Homer home. His intrepid explorations of his new environs quickly challenged Cooper's expectations of a blind cat. And through 12 years, six moves, several boyfriends and a showdown with a burglar, this tender and affecting book reveals Homer's lessons about love and acceptance and how he transformed Cooper into the woman she had always wanted to be. Homer you are my hero!
Loved, loved, loved this book!!! It made me laugh and cry. Thank you Gwen Cooper for writing such a wonderful, inspirational and beautiful story. First time reading writings of this author but will not be the last. Already purchased Love Saves the Day.
I’m In Love With Homer!
I fell in love with Homer when he was first introduced, and my love only grew as I saw him curled up in the gift bag (at the end of the book.)
My husband doesn’t like to read, so couldn’t understand my frequent giggles, cries of indignation, and tears of both joy and sadness as I read Homer’s Odyssey. I worried so much for him as he chased the burglar away and especially while he and his sisters lived through the horrors of 9/11.
Homer truly came alive on the pages of Gwen’s book and I must recommend and insist you get to know and love Homer too. As Gwen said, it makes you love and appreciate your own little furry babies even more fiercely than you did before.
I wish I could give it more stars!!
This is hands down the best book I've ever read. I could not put it down. I am indeed a huge cat fan however, this story is great for anyone who feels a lack of courage or the inability to accomplish anything in your life. It taught me so many lessons I will keep close for the rest of my life. Kudos to Gwen and Homer for such an incredible gift this boom really is. Homer I am your biggest fan!! :)
