PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In the former Soviet Union, the sports establishment, charged with producing winners for the greater glory of the empire, had almost unlimited power over the athletically gifted. Children as young as five or six were identified, sent to special schools and given rigorous training in the sports in which they were expected to excel. Two such youngsters were Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov, paired as skaters by their teachers when they were 11 and 14, respectively. Throughout their training and into the start of their competitive careers, each thought of the other only as an athletic partner, partly because the four-year difference in their ages meant they had few friends in common. But as time passed and their joint career led to international championships, they fell in love and married. Their success culminated in Olympic gold medals in 1990 and 1994. And then, suddenly, Grinkov died of a heart attack in 1995 at age 28. The story of their love and their happiness together is deeply moving, and the final chapters are heartrending, while the many photos heighten the tale. First serial to People and Redbook; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternates; author tour.

Beauty
It has been so many years that this happened, I stumbled across a video of these two beautiful people on YouTube. I have cried for them, for myself, all of the times in my life I did not say that extra “I love you”. This book , like their love , was beautiful. Thank you Katia for sharing Sergi with us. You have touched so many hearts. Especially mine
A story of life, love, loss, and strength
Katia offers a look into the life that she shared with her sweet Sergei. On the ice they were magic, there was no one like them. When they skated to Moonlight Sonata, it was Beethoven had written it just for them. Off the ice, however, was where the real magic lied. They were partners, then friends, then lovers, then husband and wife, and lastly, most importantly, parents to sweet Daria. It is a grippingly honest look into the skating world and into the life that Katia had with her Sergei. I am so grateful for the time she took to share her world with our world. She is an idol of mine, as is Sergei. Both for their strength.
Pure souls.....
I grow up in USSR ,living in USA since1995 ,and Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov were my favorite skaters .....I am same age as Sergey. Everything Katia describes in her book about life in USSR back to our childhood is so true and to read about it was nostalgic amusement. But most of it this story is about unearthly pure love that probably only few people can experience..... And the purity of their love came from Katy's and Sergey's very special, pure souls . Thank You Katia for sharing Your beautiful memory with us, now I understand even more why I was mesmerized by yours and Sergey skating together......
