Jamilia had just climbed into bed, her clothes for tomorrow neatly stacked on the shelf next to the bed, when she heard the engines stop. Why would the engines stop in the middle of the ocean? Then, her senses fully awake, she felt a bump. What was that? As she lay there, holding her breath and listening, a growing sense of anxiety and endangerment overcame her.



It is April 1912. Jamila and Elias are alone on a steamship in the middle of the Atlantic without parents and unable to speak English. How did they get here and will they survive?

Told with respect and humanity this story is a good introduction to Lebanese culture and history. At 63,000 words it is a comfortable read for young adults and contains no vulgarity, violence or sex. Faith in God is lightly interwoven throughout the story.
