Publisher Description
Two friends are midway on a canoe trip down the Danube River. Throughout the story Blackwood personifies the surrounding environment—river, sun, wind—and imbues them with a powerful and ultimately threatening character. Most ominous are the masses of dense, desultory, menacing willows, which "moved of their own will as though alive, and they touched, by some incalculable method, my own keen sense of the horrible."

Suspense
The Willows is a horror story. It leaves the reader a little on edge as Blackwood builds up an atmosphere of dread and suspense. The tale of two men travelling down the Danube River through the Carpathian mountains, camping as they canoe their way through Europe. A noise heard and not heard, movement not quite seen, a moment of feeling dread as if there is someone or something not quite there that can't be explained.
