Back Track. Paul Doiron
A short novella featuring Game Warden Charley Stevens a close friend and mentor and fatherly figure to Game Warden Mike Bowditch. Charley is thinking about an old case he had involving a missing hunter, a doctor from Boston. He finally located him but the doctor initially refused to go with him. He told Charley he was dying of cancer and wanted to die on his own terms. No one would know he committed suicide. Charley talked him out of it and transported him back to his cabin on a sled. After a brief period of time elapsed he found out the Doctor had committed suicide, a self inflicted gunshot wound. Now a much older man, Charley understood where the doctor was going through at at his age he probably would have sided him. A very sad read but Charles age and life experiences gave him a better understanding.
