Just when they thought they were out…
TwiceFar station is at the edge of the known universe, and that’s just how Niko Larson, former Admiral in the Grand Military of the Hive Mind, likes it.
Retired and finally free of the continual war of conquest, Niko and the remnants of her former unit are content to spend the rest of their days working at the restaurant they built together, The Last Chance.
But, some wars can’t ever be escaped, and unlike the Hive Mind, some enemies aren’t content to let old soldiers go. Niko and her crew are forced onto a sentient ship convinced that it is being stolen and must survive the machinations of a sadistic pirate king if they even hope to keep the dream of The Last Chance alive.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Rambo (the Tabat Quartet series) mixes far-future space opera with the trials and tribulations of running a restaurant in this clever mishmash of aliens, pirates, and humans with near-impossible dreams. Nicolette "Niko" Larson, military genius and former Admiral of the Holy Hive Mind, has retired with her motley, mixed-species unit to operate the Last Chance gourmet restaurant on TwiceFar Station at the very edge of the universe. Just as they are set to win the coveted Nikkelin Orb food award, an explosion hurls Niko, her faithful crew, and a mysterious crate they're transporting into a chaotic scramble for survival aboard the sentient bioship You Sexy Thing. The ship takes them into the clutches of a pirate king who's been planning his revenge on Niko ever since an encounter decades earlier and has a series of grisly tortures in mind. Running parallel to this plot is a coming-of-age tale starring Atlanta, an heir to the Paxian galactic empire, who was shipped to Niko to learn how to govern herself and others. Rambo crafts her characters with relish, creating credibly motivated alien beings, a plucky heroine, and a ship learning to experience emotion for the first time. The result is a thoroughly entertaining sci-fi romp.

Guard your heart.
Having a really hard time writing this to you. But you know, books are like our shared language and I want to be clear about this recommendation.
‘You Sexy Thing’ by Cat Rambo hits so many kitchen, Sci-Fi, inter-personal and just epic points. And if I could just have your traipse through the world building: I would say it’s can’t miss.
But just like so many epics: there is a place in the book, about 2-3 chapters where the cruelest, most horrific stuff happens. And I am at a pause to recommend this book to anyone because for me the reading was brutal.
Like I felt so open and vulnerable to the amazing way these fantastic characters share their personal feelings, and irritations, there is a sci-fi angle that lets you both take it so seriously and NOT take it so seriously. So the magic of it all opens you fully to just freaking awesomeness….
…..and when the terrible events hit my wise open heart: it was tremendously damaging to me. It was miserable.
I don’t believe you should ever wish misery on anyone. No matter what.
So: If you read this book: you will love it. But: you need to guard your heart. Read it without all of your heart for the first read…protect yourself.
I still recommend it. I still think it’s marvelous for a kitchen person almost more than a sci-fi person. But protect yourself. This book will deserve re-reads, open your self then. But no one deserves reading this pain without warning, even among all the wealth of interconnected closeness
Love.
Exciting Space Opera with Culinary Subplot
“You Sexy Thing” is a new space opera by Cat Rambo, and the beginning of a series. The book has a wide cast of characters, including both humans and aliens. It takes place in a future setting where there are many settled star systems, empires, space pirates, and easy interstellar travel. There is also magic, prophecy, ghosts, and other supernatural aspects which I wasn’t too excited about.
The narrative revolves around a band of ex-soldiers lead by Niko who have left the service of the Holy Hive Mind and established a restaurant on a station called Twice Far. This station becomes the object of unwelcome attention during a game being played by inscrutable god-like aliens, and they have to evacuate to save themselves and a Princess which was unexpectedly shipped to them for safekeeping. They end up on a Bioship owned by an incredibly wealthy patron called “You Sexy Thing.” This living and sentient ship unfortunately gets hijacked and brought to a pirate outpost where Niko’s past may lead to their demise.
This is an exciting book, with lots of action. It has a lot of SF and possibly fantasy aspects that readers will be familiar with. It’s an easy read, and the whole culinary plot line is definitely unique and interesting. Unfortunately for me, I’m a little put off by the addition of the fantasy elements. I also didn’t particularly like the space pirates as antagonists. However, people’s tastes vary, and these aspects might be fine for them.
