Rachel Owen Glenn finds herself born into a sugar-growing family in 18th century Jamaica, where she has difficulty reconciling her family’s history of oppressing black slaves with her own growing beliefs in racial and gender equality.However, while she embraces a forbidden love, Rachel and members of her family struggle to overcome a myriad of conflicting pressures, including fears of slave insurrections, wars with the French, the Haitians and the Maroons, racial barriers, and societal hypocrisy, to try to build a home where she would be happy.
