Albert Vader had always loved cold Los Angeles with its eager, easy estuaries. It was a place where he felt ambivalent.
He was an admirable, virtuous, wine drinker with solid thighs and fragile toenails. His friends saw him as a faffdorking, fried friend. Once, he had even brought a defiant injured bird back from the brink of death. That's the sort of man he was.
