Ok I’m not joking, Read this book!
I was given this series a Christmas present, and I have to say, I was rather skeptical. I thought Oh just another crappy middle grade novel, but boy was I wrong. The story is told from two perspectives: Zed, a half elf and Brock the merchants son. The book begins with the two boys going to a witches tent to get special charms in hope of good luck for the Guildculling, a once a year celebration where all of the children at the age of 12 are selected for a Guild. Brock is hoping for the Merchants Guild whereas Zed hopes to be a mage. With a turn of events Brock is approached by the Guildmaster of the Merchants Guild and is asked to spy on the Adventurers Guild. The only Guild that is allowed outside of Freestone, but only to fight the Dangers or monsters that lie beyond the wall. Zed is also drafted for the Adventurers Guild where they meet Liza a young Nobel, and Jett dwarf, Jayna the Wizard and Micha Liza’s excruciatingly rude twin brother. Throughout this incredible trilogy, these six children journey outside of Freestone’s walls to restore a focus to recharge the walls. This series will keep you second guessing every move in a world where friend is pitted against friend and brother against sister.
