The first book in an exciting space opera trilogy from New York Times bestselling author Timothy Zahn, Pawn
“Tim Zahn is a master of tactics and puts his own edge on complex hard-SF thrillers.” —Kevin J. Anderson, New York Times bestselling author
Nicole Lee’s life is going nowhere. No family, no money, and stuck in a relationship with a thug named Bungie. But, after one of Bungie’s “deals” goes south, he and Nicole are whisked away by a mysterious moth-like humanoid to a strange ship called the Fyrantha.
Once aboard, life on the ship seems too good to be true. All she has to do is work on one of the ship’s many maintenance crews. However, she learned long ago that nothing comes without a catch. When she’s told to keep quiet and stop asking questions, she knows she is on to something.
Nicole soon discovers that many different factions are vying for control of the Fyrantha, and she and her friends are merely pawns in a game beyond their control. But, she is tired of being used, and now Nicole is going to fight.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Space opera fans are sure to enjoy this fast-paced, pulpy introduction to veteran Zahn's new trilogy. Nicole Hammond, a 19-year-old alcoholic, is living the hard life in Philadelphia. She's suffering from an atrocious hangover and attempting a kidnapping when her life goes from bad to weird: aliens abduct her and her criminal colleague, and Nicole discovers that the voices she's been hearing for years are a side effect of her ability to psychically communicate with a massive spaceship. The alien ship is staffed by humans who are press-ganged into working as repair crews. Though the security of life aboard the ship has its appeal, Nicole discovers evidence that the entire situation is much worse than it looks, and she reluctantly steps beyond her life as a self-serving nobody. The book stumbles briefly on moments of inexplicable sexism but is otherwise a solid, fun, zippy read that delivers all the expected twists. This promises to be a rollicking series.
Customer Reviews
Classic Zahn
A great start and set-up for yet another epic series of Zahn novels. If you loved (or are still loving) the way Timothy wrote the Cobra series, the Black Collar series or the Conqueror's series, you will appreciate the way this book has been written. The Master of Space Opera has done it again and I for one, can't wait for more.
