Publisher Description
Deena Livingston leaves behind a broken romance and her chef job in Atlanta to spend time at her grandfather's cabin in the mountains of North Carolina. But her grandfather has an odd request: he wants Deena to teach cooking classes to the ragtag group of middle-schoolers who attend the local afterschool program, The Center. Reluctantly, Deena agrees, but how is she supposed to convince these kids that cooking at home is better than eating at McDonalds? And after all she went through in Atlanta, why is she attracted to Zack, the social worker at The Center? Can a Dr. Seuss-quoting plumber, a curly-haired basketball player, and a group of middle-schoolers change Deena's outlook on life?

Good read
Interesting characters and charming story of healing and attachment.
Worth a read, but just okay.
Honestly, I was forcing myself to read more than the first half of this book. All of Deena's thoughts to herself, which are kind of just chasing rabbits, fill up entire batches of pages without going very far. Going back and forth between her present day life and full passages about her past was pretty annoying. However, and this is a big however, I loved the book. I think it would have been a great book if she had started the deepened storyline with Zack, Darren, and other kids from The Center sooner. If the book had primarily been about that journey. At the end it skipped --like a school assignment. It was like a goal was reached and there was nothing beyond that.
I'd certainly love to know the continuation of the blossoming relationships she formed with both Zack and the kids.
