Jennings Offers Another Delightful Blend of History and Romance
Betsy Huckabee might be a small-town girl, but she has big-city dreams. Writing for her uncle's newspaper will never lead to independence, and the bigger newspapers don't seem interested in the Hart County news. Trying a new approach, Betsy pens a romanticized serial for the ladies' pages, and the new deputy provides the perfect inspiration for her submissions. She'd be horrified if he read her breathless descriptions of him, but these articles are for a newspaper far away. No one in Pine Gap will ever know.
Deputy Joel Puckett didn't want to leave Texas, but this job in tiny Pine Gap is his only shot at keeping his badge. With masked marauders riding every night, his skills and patience are tested, but even more challenging is the sassy journalist lady chasing him.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Betsy Huckabee is a spirited, adventurous woman writing for her uncle's newspaper in the little town of Pine Gap, Mo. not the most common occurrence during the 19th century. She dreams of being published in a big-city newspaper, and her rejections seem to be over when handsome Joel Puckett arrives as the new town deputy and inspiration strikes for a fictionalized story. Although believing she is destined to be free from a man's grip, Betsy is charmed by Joel's rugged good looks and creates a tale featuring the handsome "Deputy Eduardo Pickett." Eduardo, burned by his former mistress, has sworn off love and never expects to fall for the charms of a small-town reporter. While Joel tries to maintain the peace in Pine Gap, he is faced with conflict from the masked vigilantes who ride through the town at night. Unable to trust anyone, Joel struggles to cleanse the town of its corrupt leadership and prove that he is worthy of his badge, all while maintaining his swoon-inducing motto: "A hero always comes back for his lady." Jennings (At Love's Bidding) creates a perfect blend of love, mystery, and wit in this 19th-century romance.
Customer Reviews
A good blend of romance and crime mystery
Deputy Joel Puckett has been hired to reinstate law and order in Pine Gap, Missouri. Yet, as soon as he steps off the train, he's keenly aware that he's no longer in Texas and that he's got to learn a whole new set of rules and way of life.
Betsy Huckabee wants nothing more than to be published in a big city newspaper. So, when a new, handsome lawman arrives in town, the temptation is too great not to use him as a source for her articles. However, as she gets to know him better, is she getting too personal? Surely they won't cause anyone any trouble?
I honestly enjoyed reading this book. There's a good blend of romance and crime mystery. On the one hand, Betsy has prided herself at successfully rejecting every eligible man in Pine Gap. Yet, she can't help herself from falling for her Dashing Deputy. Mingled within the romance is an ongoing criminal investigation that the new deputy is determined to solve.
Themes covered in the book are: integrity, family / civic loyalty, upholding the law, facing your accusers and letting truth be known.
Romance and Language are both clean. There are a few kisses mentioned.
My rating - 5 stars.
