The retired NBA giant with the huge game and personality to match dominates in this boisterous, peevish memoir. O'Neal is surprisingly generous towards his stepfather, a man who, he claims, disciplined him with frequent beatings while nurturing his basketball talent. He's testier towards Lakers teammate Kobe Bryant, who comes off as an aloof ball-hog, Utah star Greg Ostertag "he was mouthing off again, so I turned and slapped him upside the head" and anyone else who doubted or dissed him. Paced as if by shot-clock, the meandering narrative flits between arena, locker-room and an off-court life lived large "The guy buys me a $150,000 Rolex watch for shaking his hand" on hundreds of millions of dollars in salary, endorsements, movie parts, rap albums, reality show, and self-satisfied smirking. ("I am Shaq. Bigger than life, brother. Bigger than life.") A good quick read. Revealing at times, at times not. He deserves credit for trying to live the most interesting life he can. Did not like the abuse he took from his father.
Must read biography
Nonfiction novels are usually not my thing. But this biography of Shaquille O'Neal is a perfect way to find out what made one of the greatest basketball players of all time tick. I read it in one day. It is easy to read and flows smoothly.
Fun read
This is a pretty good book, interesting and funny at the same time. The first chapter or so is a little boring. It's the normal "celebrity tells us how he grew up", a lot of stuff already known. However, it gets going after that. It's fun to hear about different players shaq played with. If you can get past shaq's self absorbing manner and slightly racist comments you will find that it's very entertaining book.
