Publisher Description
Selah Hopewell seems to be the only woman in the Virginia colony who has no wish to wed. True, there are too many men and far too few women in James Towne. But Selah already has her hands full assisting her father in the family's shop. And now she is in charge of an incoming ship of tobacco brides who must be looked after as they sort through their many suitors.
Xander Renick is perhaps the most eligible tobacco lord in the settlement. His lands are vast, his crops are prized, and his position as a mediator between the colonists and the powerful Powhatan nation surrounding them makes him indispensable. But Xander is already wedded to his business and still grieves the loss of his wife, daughter of the Powhatan chief.
Can two fiercely independent people find happiness and fulfillment on their own? Or will they discover that what they've been missing in life has been right in front of them all along?
Bestselling and award-winning author Laura Frantz takes you to the salty shores of seventeenth-century Virginia in this exploration of pride, honor, and the restorative power of true love.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Frantz (An Uncommon Woman) weaves suspense and romance beautifully in this enjoyable inspirational historical. In 1634 in the Virginia Colony, Selah Hopewell helps guide the women coming from England who have been recruited to marry men in the colonies. Her friend Xander Renick is one of the wealthiest tobacco lords in Virginia, and is married to Mattachanna, the Powhatan chief's daughter. Xander and Mattachanna, along with their two-year old son, Oceanus, travel to Xander's native Scotland. While there, Mattachanna dies of illness, and, deeming Oceanus too frail to make the journey back, Xander returns alone. As feelings develop between the widower and fiercely independent Selah, Oceanus, now four years old, returns in the care of a marriage-eligible nanny. However, Oceanus's status as the grandson of the Powhatan chief makes him a target for deception, sabotage, and kidnapping as the political situation between the settlers and tribe becomes more tumultuous. As one tragedy leads to another, love and faith are tested all around. With its well-rounded characters and tense frontier conflicts, Frantz's entertaining romance will be a hit with her fans.

Immersive!
Take a journey back in time to 1634 James Towne! This novel was just beautiful! The language, the atmosphere...everything was sewn seamlessly to transport and completely immerse me into another time. Never have I ever read a book that so totally captured an era and location that, with every sentence consumed, it left me with no doubts as to where and when I was in the story. Incredible!
I loved Xander and Selah, along with all of the supporting characters. (I believe I was repeating Powhatan names in my mind even in my dreams because I loved the sound of them so much, lol!) The tensions between the Naturals and the Settlers felt so palpable and added background anxiety into every decision to be made. And then, right when you have settled into the routine of colony life, BAM! Everything happens at once and sets you in a tailspin! (Or, in the world of story, is it a talespin?)
Author Laura Frantz has created an amazing novel here with her Tidewater Bride. The setting, the cast...everything is alive and tangible and REAL! The story is begging to be devoured, the romance is waiting patiently to bring a satisfied smile to your face, the danger has come calling and is waiting at your door... Will you answer?
(p.s. This is my first novel by this author. My sister loves her books and has been telling me I ought to read them. I should’ve heeded her advice sooner!)
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
Loved this book
I was going to give this book a five rating but when it got to the mystery part of the book it just drug on way too long. Other than that it was a five star book. Absolutely wonderful.
