The Girl in the Garden

Hello Perspective Reader,

I just finished this book and I loved it. I liked the writing best. It really kept my interest. I also enjoyed the multitude of stories and the suspense. This book is an easy read. It has life lessons about facing things, not keeping secrets and forgiveness. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

The Girl in the Garden

This is a beautiful, rich and compassionate story. I finished the story feeling close to the characters, as if they were my family for that hot summer. Nair gives a clear picture of the life of a brown skinned hyphenated American girl in middle, middle class America. She has left images of India inside of me. Not an India I could visit as a tourist (I have been there), but but an India peopled with characters whose lives I could have never know if Nair had not written this book. Thank you, Kamala Nair.

Gripping modern Jane Eyre: a coming of age mystery that will never let you go

What hides in a timeless, beautiful garden in Kerala, and why must the children never venture near? And with such a simple question, Ms. Nair weaves one of the most unforgettable, timeless fairy tales of our time.

This is one of those rare novels that once begun is impossible to turn away from, so be forewarned and prepared to read it in one sitting. Though this is only to feel the loneliness of missing a beloved friend, and to want to begin all over again. Unlike many big stories that try the reader's patience with unnecessary details, Nair's novel efficiently contains a multi-generational family saga of great passions, loves, deaths, secrets, ruin, and redemption, allowing one to feel the thrill (and terror) of the heroine's explorations in the new world of her mother's childhood estate in an impossibly bright, refulgent, sheerly alive ( yet slumbering under the curse of the family's errors) Southern India.

Myth and a pervasive sense of the magic of a ruined ancestral home, its gardens, its stories, and its tragic secret, combine as Rakhee discovers her own strength of character, makes lifelong friendships, and confronts her mother's devastating history, only to learn, in the end, that the real test of growing up isn't merely the ability to judge, but to understand, to forgive, and finally, painfully, to love the very parents who are not perfect, but as human and flawed as oneself.

As with all great literature, The Girl in the Garden helps us to understand our own choices, and the lives of others, through the choices of its characters. It will become a friend in the best sense of being both entertaining and edifying, for life.
